Mrs. Horndt Services Held
Funeral services were held at the family residence and at St. John's Lutheran church in Shaws Bend Saturday morning for Mrs. Annie Horndt who died Thursday at a La Grange hospital after having been ill for many months. Burial was in Brune's cemetery with Rev. G. Wolf officiating. Untermeyer Bros. were in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Horndt was born in Germany on July 20, 1892, coming to this country with her parents when she was a small child. She was a daughter of William and Lena Ahlgrim Balzer. On Nov. 29, 1921, she was married to Paul Horndt. She was a member of the Lutheran church.
She is survived by her husband, two sons, Clarence, recently discharged from the army, and Marvin; two sisters, Mrs. Ewald Kansteiner and Mrs. Fred Chollett, Columbus, and seven brothers, Herman, Rudolph, Fritz and Charlie, Columbus; Paul and Willie, Hallettsville, and Elo, Navasota.
Pallbearers were Herman Brune, Joe Stancik, Harry Hlinsky, Willie Tietschert, W. A. Struss and Henry Fuchs.

Rites Yesterday For 82-Year-Old 'Grandma' Horndt
Mrs. Wilhelm B. Horndt, 82, died at her home in Shaw's Bend Tuesday morning at 5:20, after an illness of 4 months. She suffered a stroke Saturday morning.
The former Bertha Staffeldt, she was born in Germany. She was married to Wilhelm Horndt in Germany and came to America in 1890. For 11 years the couple lived in Ellinger and then moved to their present farm home at Shaw's Bend.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m. from Untermeyer Funeral home, with Rev. Raymond Durst officiating. Burial was in the Brune cemetery at Shaw's Bend.
Survivors include her aged husband; one daughter, Mrs. Paul Poenitzsch of Shaw's Bend, 4 sons, Paul and Fritz of Shaw's Bend and Alvin and Charles of Columbus; also 14 grandchildren and one brother, William Staffeldt of Shaw's Bend.
Two daughters and a son preceded her in death. One of the daughters, Mrs. Edward Plagens, died 11 months ago to the day. Her grandsons were pallbearers.

Last Rites For Charles Horndt Held Here Saturday
Funeral services for Charles Horndt, 70, were held in St. Paul's Lutheran church Saturday afternoon, Rev. H. L. Anderson officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellows Rest cemetery. Mr. Horndt's body lay in state at Untermeyer Funeral home until time of services.
Born in Ellinger Feb. 27, 1895, he was a son of Wilhelm and Bertha Staffeldt Horndt. In 1919, he was married to Ella Kansteiner. She died Feb. 5, 1947. Mr. Horndt had been in failing health since that time.
He died in Youens hospital at Weimar May 21 after having been a patient there for 11 days.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran church and was a retired farmer. He served in the armed forces in World War I.
Survivors include 2 sons, Harry and Edgar and a daughter, Mrs. Robert Little; a sister, Mrs. Paul Poenitzsch, and 2 brothers, Fritz and Alvin Horndt, all of Columbus, and 5 grandchildren, Grady, Glenn and Gregg Horndt and Ellen and David Little.
Pallbearers were Clarence and Marvin Horndt and Lloyd and Edwin Poenitzsch of Columbus, Elwert Kansteiner of Houston and Arthur Rodick of Brenham.

Horndt
Clarence William Horndt Sr., 81, of Eagle Lake, passed away May 11, at his home in Eagle Lake.
He was born Jan. 6, 1925 in Shaws Bend, to Paul and Annie Balzer Horndt. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Shaws Bend and attended school in Shaws Bend through ninth grade. On Jan. 26, 1947 he married his wife of 59 years, Onie Mae Stancik Horndt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Colum-bus and he was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinger.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army (93rd Airdrome Squadron) Sept. 21, 1944. He served during WWII in the Pacific Campaign and re-ceived the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Ribbon (Japan), Victory Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars and qualified as a Sharpshooter (rifle).
He was honorably discharged Oct. 29, 1946 with the rank as a Corporal. He was discharged from the U.S. Air Force Reserve on Oct. 4, 1948.
During his lifetime, he was employed as a plumber, a mechanic, hauled gasoline for Sinclair, owner of a farm store, cowboy for Double D Feeders, and a farmer and rancher for the Wegenhoft ranch in Garwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; and son, Michael C. Horndt.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Carolyn Bartosh and husband Larry of Ellinger; Patricia Ann Flores and husband, Arthur, of Eagle Lake, Dawn Michelle Horndt and husband, Arnold Cardenas, of Eagle Lake; sons, James Horndt and wife, Becky, of Cat Spring, and Clarence Horndt, Jr. and wife, Ruth of Ellinger; eight grandchildren, Dustin Horndt, Stephanie Horndt, Carissa Bartosh, Sarah Horndt, Elissa Horndt, Garrett Flores, Bruno Flores and Madisyn Horndt; five step grandchildren, Lori Flores Patric, Amy Flores, Adrian Flores, Brandon Hall and Katy Hall; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Mar-vin Horndt and wife, Clara, of Columbus; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, with Pastor Linda Mosley officiating. Interment followed at Brune Cemetery in Shaws Bend.
Pallbearers were the grandchildren and honorary pallbearers the step grandchildren.

Mrs. Horndt Funeral Today
Funeral services will be held at the family home this afternoon and at St. Paul’s Lutheran church immediately following for Mrs. Charles Horndt who died Wednesday. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Rest.
Mrs. Horndt was found early Wednesday morning by family members at a gravel pit lake near the Horndt home where she had drowned.
The former Ella Kansteiner, she was born near Ellinger.
Survivors include her husband, one daughter, Charline; two sons, Harry and Edgar, and a brother, Awald Kansteiner of Shaws Bend. She also leaves some half brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Charles Horndt Buried on Thursday
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon for Mr.[sic] Charles Horndt who was found drowned in a gravel pit lake near her home early Wednesday morning. Rev. G. Wolf officiated in the services and Untermeyer Bros. were in ing[sic] charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Horndt was born Ella Kansteiner near Ellinger on Jan. 4, 1894, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kansteiner. She was married to Mr. Horndt on Oct. 22, 1919.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Harry and Edgar; a daughter, Charline; one brother Awald Kansteiner, Shaws Bend; five half brothers, Lawrence, Leo, Walter, Herbert and Alvin Kansteiner, and one half sister, Miss Frieda Kansteiner.
Pallbearers were Henry Buescher Sr., Charles Lipperdt, Ewald Girndt, Monroe Kuhn and Cornelius Fowler.

Fritz A. Horndt
Fritz A. Horndt died Monday at Columbus Community Hospital after an illness of six weeks. He was 78 years of age.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Henneke Funeral Home, with The Rev. Lee Eschberger officiating. Interment was at Brune Cemetery at Shaw's Bend.
Mr. Horndt was born at Ellinger Oct. 24, 1899, the son of Wilhelm and Bertha Horndt. He resided in the Shaw's Bend area all of his life where he was a farmer. He was married to the former Mary Fuchs on Jan. 3, 1928.
Mr. Horndt was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinger.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Poenitzsch of Shaw's Bend, and one brother, Alvin H. Horndt of Columbus. A daughter, Willie Mae, preceded him in death on March 5, 1934.
Pallbearers were Edwin Poenitasch, Delbert Fuchs, Marvin Horndt, Milton Kansteiner, Clarence Horndt and Lawrence Poenitzsch.
Honorary pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Horndt.

Hilda Katharina Horndt
Hilda Katharina Horndt of Columbus died July 28th at St. Jude Hospital in Brenham at the age of 74.
Funeral services were held July 30 at 4:30 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home with burial at Brune Cemetery in Shaws Bend. Pastor Robert Schlortt officiated.
Mrs. Horndt was born June 14, 1909 at Shaws Bend to Wilhelmina Chollett and Fred Fuchs. She married Alvin H. Horndt on July 15, 1930. She was a housewife and spent her lifetime in this community. Mrs. Horndt belonged to the Lutheran church.
Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mary Anell Horndt of Houston; one sister, Mary Horndt of Shaws Bend; two brothers, John Fuchs of Columbus, and Willie Fuchs of New Bielau.
Pallbearers were Bobby Joe Marsalia, Milton Kansteiner, Delbert Fuchs, Marvin Horndt, Larry Poenitzsch, and Harry Horndt.

Michael C. Horndt, 53, of El Campo, passed away April 26 at his residence.
He was born Oct. 6, 1952 to Clarence W. Horndt Sr. and Onie Mae Stancik and worked as a front end loader operator for Greenleaf Nursery in El Campo. He was a member of Woodman of the World and served in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard.
He was survived by his parents; son, Dustin Michael Horndt and wife, Jennifer, of Eagle Lake; step-daughter, Shauna Vise Oxner and husband, Wayne, of Iraq; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Larry Bartosh, of Ellinger, Patricia Ann and Arthur Flores, of Eagle Lake and Dawn Michelle Horndt and Arnold Cardenas, of Eagle Lake; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Becky Horndt, of Cat Spring and Clarence Jr. and Ruth Horndt, of Ellinger; grandson, Joshua Lee Horndt, of Eagle Lake; and nieces and nephews, Carissa Fae Bartosh, Stephanie Horndt, Sarah Beth Horndt, Elissa Horndt, Garrett Flores, Bruno Flores, Lori Flores Patric, Amy Flores, Adrian Flores and Madisyn Horndt.
Funeral services were April 29 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Gary Bagley officiating. Interment followed at Brune Cemetery in Shaws Bend.
Pallbearers were Arnold Cardenas, Garrett Flores, Bruno Flores, J.R. Horndt, Jim Horndt, Larry Bartosh and Arthur Flores.

Paul F. Horndt, 58, Found Dead at Home In Shaws Bend
Funeral services for Paul Frank Horndt, 58, were held at the Untermeyer Funeral home here last Sunday afternoon with Rev. Raymond Durst of Ellinger and rev. G. Wolf of Columbus officiating.
Mr. Horndt was found hanging in a shed beside his Shaw's Bend home Friday morning by Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Schobel of Schulenburg, his former neighbors in Shaw's Bend, and by Mrs. Herman Stolle, who had drive over to buy some chickens.
Justice of the Peace C. L. Griffith and Deputies Marvin Buller and Ed Potter investigated. A verdict of suicide was returned.
Mr. Horndt was born at Live Oak hill, near Ellinger, Dec. 31, 1897, a son of Wilhelm and Bertha Staffeldt Horndt. They later moved to Shaw's Bend.
In October, 1922, Mr. Horndt was married to the former Anna Balzer who died in 1946.
Survivors include 2 sons, Clarence Horndt of Hattiesburg, Miss. and Marvin Horndt of Columbus; his father; a twin sister, Mrs. Paul Poenitzsch of Shaw's Bend; 3 brothers, Alvin and Charles Horndt of Columbus and Fritz Horndt of Shaw's Bend; and 3 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were his nephews, Edgar Horndt, Edwin and Lloyd Poenitzsch, Robert Balzer, Arthur Rodick and Harry Heintschel.
Burial was in the Brune cemetery at Shaw's Bend.

93-Year-Old Wilhelm Horndt Is Buried Monday
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at Untermeyer Funeral home for 93-year-old Wilhelm H. Horndt, native of Germany, who died in Columbus hospital Sunday at 4:45 a.m. Rev. G. Wolf of Columbus and Rev. Raymond Durst of Rutersville officiated, and burial was in Brune cemetery at Shaw's Bend.
Born Nov. 17, 1863, he was a son of Christhoff and Marie Gross Horndt. Married Oct. 24, 1890, to Bertha Staffeldt, the couple arrived in Ellinger from Germany Nov. 17, 1891. He and his family were engaged in farming near Ellinger until 1901 when they moved to the Shaw's Bend community where they continued to do farming and also ranching.
Mr. Horndt was a member of Shaw's Bend Lutheran church. His wife died Nov. 15, 1955.
They had 8 children of which 4 have died. They are Mrs. Minnie Plagens, Mrs. Annie Poenitzsch, Paul Horndt and Willie Horndt. Living children are Mrs. Paul Poenitzsch and Fritz Horndt of Shaw's Bend and Alvin and Charlie Horndt of Route 2, Columbus. There are 14 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Lawrence and Calvin Poenitzsch, Harry and Clarence Horndt, Robert Little and Harry Heintschel.

In "The Lutheran Caller, date unknown, pg. 4 (title of article unknown -- apparently not an obituary, but written close to the end of the lives of Wilhelm and Bertha Horndt's lives.)
Visiting with grandpa and grandma always affords an opportunity of a look back, retracing some of the steps our parents and grandparents have taken to get where they are now. For example, William Henry Horndt, that is, father Horndt in Shaws Bend, was born in Germany on November 17, 1863, who married Bertha Hermina Staffelt on October 24, 1890, with whom he arrived in Ellinger, Texas, on November 17, 1891, that is, on his birthday. Bertha Hermina Staffelt Horndt was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, on March 15, 1873. The Horndts have lived in Fayette and Colorado counties ever since. Neither he nor she ever went back to pay Germany a visit. On account of customs, circumstances and other factors, Colorado county, yea even Shaws Bend alone, offered the Horndts more than all of Germany. To the Horndts 8 children were born, 3 daughters and 5 sons, namely, Minnie, Mrs. Ed Plagens of Shelby; Annie, the deceased Mrs. Paul Poenitzsch; Charles; Paul and Elizabeth, the present Mrs. Paul Poenitzsch, who are twins; Fritz; William who died as an infant; and Alvin, all of Columbus. Besides their own immediate children, the Horndts claim 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, making a total of 46 people added to the population of Texas, 44 of whom are still living. Father Horndt maintains that in the old country it would have been impossible for him to acquire an acre of land whereas here in Colorado county he now possesses over 400 acres. Mother Horndt insists that church must be, otherwise people will become heathen. In her own language she said: "Kirche muss sein, sonst verwildert alles." We wish the Horndts a beautiful sunset here in their earthly life and a bright and happy dawn in their new life in heaven.

Funeral services for Willie Mae Horndt, 3, who died here Wednesday morning of last week following an illness of over five weeks were held here Thursday afternoon at two o'clock in the Lutheran cemetery, Rev. H. C. Poehlmann of the Lutheran Church officiating. Surviving are her parents Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Horndt; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fuchs; and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Horndt; nine uncles and nine aunts. Pallbearers were: Elo Balzer and Harry Riesing of this community, Herbert Lipperdt of Columbus, and Frank Koehl of Ellinger. We all extend our sincere sympathy to the sorrowing ones.[ Buried Brune Cemetery]
