Marek, Elaine Jessie (Poentzsch) Elaine Jessie POENITZSCH, 30 Dec 1946 - 18 June 1967 "Services Today For Mrs. Marek, Accident Victim" "Funeral services were to be held this (Thursday) morning at 9 for Mrs. Elaine Poenitzsch Marek, aged 20, of Sealy, who was killed in an auto accident Sunday near Wallis in Wharton county.  According to Highway Patrolman Don Keith of Wharton who investigated the accident, Mrs. Marek was thrown from the car which her husband, Donald Allen Marek, 20, was driving.  Apparently he had lost control at a curve and the car had run off the road, striking a culvert.  Mr. Marek was transferred to Methodist hospital in Houston from East Bernard. "Services were to be from the chapel of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral home in Sealy, followed by funeral mass at 9:30 in the Immaculate Conception church.  Burial was to be in Brune cemetery at Shaw's Bend, Rev. James Quilter officiating.  Parish rosary was recited Wednesday evening in the funeral home. "This young couple had married May 14 (Mother's Day) and the accident occurred just a month later, on Father's Day.  She was employed by Margaret's Beauty shop in Sealy and Mr. Marek is with Brown Oil & Tool co. of Houston. "Mrs. Marek was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Poenitzsch of Sealy, formerly of Shaw's Bend.  She was born in Columbus Dec. 30, 1946.  Survivors include her parents, 2 brothers Leonard and Allen, and a sister, Lorraine, of Sealy. Final Rites for John Marek, 88, Held Wednesday Funeral services for John Marek, 88, retired farmer, were held Wednesday, Jan 11, at Hubbard Funeral home, with the Rev. Charles Bawel, pastor of Weimar United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery. Mr. Marek, who made his home with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dusek, died there Monday after a long period of failing health. Born March 7, 1872, in Czechoslovakia, he was about 6 years old when his parents brought him to this country. He and his family moved to the Bila Hora section 50 years ago. His first wife, Mrs. Rosa Fojt Marek, died about 44 years ago, and he married Miss Mary Pudich. The Mareks moved to Weimar with the Dusek’s 4 years ago. Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters and a son by his first wife, Mrs. Wm. Cooley of here, Mrs. Emil Krejci of Rosenberg and Ben Marek of San Antonio; and two other daughters, Mrs. Arthur Hartensteiner of Houston and Mrs. Joe Dusek here. Marek, Laura (Klaus) Marek, V. L. Jr. Flood waters claim Columbus couple By Tracy Dang, Sealy News Managing Editor Heavy rains and flooded waters claimed the lives of an elderly Columbus couple when their car was swept off a county road Saturday night. The bodies of V.L. Marek Jr., 78, and Laura Kraus Marek, 74, were found Sunday morning near the Sandy/Pastoren Creek Bridge on New Bremen Road in Industry. "The victims had attended a party at 7475 Galle Lane," Deputy Ray Roberson wrote in his report. "While there, it started to rain heavy, and the low water crossing on the property over a creek flooded. "The victims wanted to leave (and) had property owner Larry Eckermann attempt to drive them through the flooded low water crossing. During the attempt, the car stalled in the water. The victims remained with the car while Eckermann went back to retrieve a tractor to pull them out. "When Eckermann returned to the scene, the car had been swept downstream with both victims on the hood. A short time later, the car was swept further into the flood waters, and Eckermann lost sight of the victims." The Industry Volunteer Fire Department, New Ulm VFD, Bleiblerville VFD, Bellville VFD, Cat Spring VFD, Sealy VFD, Austin County EMS, Austin County Sheriff's Department, Pct. 2 Constable, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens and Bellville Police Department spearheaded a rescue attempt, let by Industry Fire Chief John Spiess. But the search was called off three hours later at 11:45 p.m. due to "cold, heavy rain and lightning, with the creek running full stream (approximately 10-12 feet deep and 30 feet across) and rapidly spilling out of the stream bed causing flooding in the search area." Search efforts resumed Sunday morning at 8 a.m., and the bodies were found approximately 2 1/2 hours later. "The male victim (deceased) was located upstream from the New Bremen Road bridge and upstream from the intersection of the Sandy and Pastoren Creeks buried in sand drift by search team No. 3," Spiess said. "The female victim (deceased) was found downstream from the New Bremen Road bridge, approximately 1.3 miles from the low water crossing on Galle Lane, by search team No. 1." "I spoke with Justice of the Peace Thomas Richter, who told me that the time of death on both victims was going to be 10:30 a.m., and they were going to be rules as an accidental drowning," Deputy Kevin Gough wrote in his report. The bodies were identified by the victims' daughter-in-law. The family declined an autopsy and the victims were taken to Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus. Born July 18, 1932 near Shelby, the daughter of Hugo and Ida (Mayer) Kraus. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Columbus where she had been in the past a Sunday School teacher, and member of the Altar Guild, she also enjoyed being a homemaker, her husband's secretary, arts and crafts and being with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband V.L. Marek Jr.; her parents; and brothers, Jack, Wesley and Elvis "Pete" Kraus. She is survived by two sons, Mike Marek and wife Lisa of Hallett-sville, and Patrick Marek and wife Sherry of Columbus; sister Wilma Eckermann of Shelby; grandchildren, Brandi Hart, Michael, Matthew and Shelby Lynn Marek and Katie Brown; and great-grandchildren, Chloi and Orion Hart. Funeral services took place Jan. 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeffrey Marsh officiating and under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home of Col-umbus. Burial followed at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus. Pallbearers were Matthew Marek, Scott Eckerman, Michael Combs, Michael Marek, Ken Giles, and Larry Eckerman. Marek Jr. She was born near Shelby and worked as a homemaker and as her husband's secretary. She enjoyed arts and crafts. She is survived by: two sons, Mike Marek and wife Lisa of Hallettsville and Patrick Marek and wife Sherry of Columbus; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wilma Eckermann of Shelby. She was preceded in death by: her husband, V. L. Marek Jr.; her parents, Hugo and Ida Mayer Klaus; and three brothers, Jack, Wesley and Elvis "Pete" Klaus. Marek, Ollie (Blazek) Ollie Blazek Marek, 95, of Columbus, died Thursday, June 30, 1994, in a Columbus nursing home. Born Marcy 17, 1899, in Brookshire; she was the daughter of Frank and Verona (Rubac) Blazek. On Jan. 29, 1930, she married Peter P. Marek. Mrs. Marek was retired seamstress and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. She resided in Columbus since 1972. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 2, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Father Tim Kosler officiating. Interment followed in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home, Columbus. Pallbearers were Edward Bratigan, John Bratigan, Daniel Marek, Donnie Hondall, Gary Blazek and Frank Blazek. She is survived by sisters Mary McNabb of Houston and Julia Gregory of Calvert; brothers, Richard Blazek of Austin and Ervin Blazek of Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Marek was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 25, 1982, her parents, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 27, at 10:30 p.m.[sic] at St. Anthony's Catholic Church under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home, with Father Brian Crookes officiating. Burial was at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery. Parish Rosary and K. C. rosary were held Tuesday, October 26, at Henneke Funeral Home. Mr. Marek was born May 18, 1899, in Old Sweet Home, Texas to Frank and Agnes Rehak Marek. He married Ollie Blazek in 1930 at St. Joseph's Rectory in Houston. He was a retired cleaning and pressing shop employee, a member of the Catholic Church, the KJT No. 36 Taiton, Columbus Knights of Columbus, a member of the American Legion and was in WWI. He is survived by his wife, Ollie Marek of Columbus; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Dusek of Shiner, and Mrs. Annie Hundl of Houston and one brother, John P. Marek of Taiton. In the past years, he was owner of Universal Electronics, Little Jug Liquor Store, Marek's Furniture and Oaks Realty of Columbus and also an investor of land. He served in the National Guard Company A of the 136th tank battalion and was honorably discharged on Oct. 10, 1955 as Sgt. First Class. He was preceded in death by his wife Laura Marek and his parents. He was survived by two sons, Mike Marek and wife Lisa of Hallettsville and Patrick Marek and wife Sherry of Columbus; brothers, Jack Marek of Houston and Bobby Marek of Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren, Brandi Hart, Michael, Matthew and Shelby Lynn Marek and Katie Brown; and great-grandchildren, Chloi and Orion Hart. Marek, 80, Buried Monday at St. Michael's Funeral services for Mrs. Veronika Marek, 80, who died Saturday, Sept. 7, in Youens Hospital here after a week's illness, were held Monday morning at Hubbard Funeral Home and St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment was in St. Michael's Cemetery. Msgr. A.F.Drozd officiated. Born March 11, 1877, in Czechoslovakia, she was the daughter of John and Rosie Tomastik. She came to this country at the age of 14 and was married at Live Oak Hill in 1899 to Edward Marek, who preceded her in death in 1941. She had lived in Weimar area about 21 years. Mrs. Marek was a member of St. Michael's Church, the Christian Mothers Society and KJZT Society. Surviving her are one son, Edward Marek of Pleasanton; six daughters, Mrs. Vlasta Petrosky of Columbus, Mrs. Sophie Walkaviak of Highland, Mrs. Lillie Thompson of Baytown, Mrs. Annie Pavlet of Dayton, Mrs. Louise Brasher of Eagle Lake, and Miss Vera Marek of East Bernard; one sister, Mrs. Frances Zatopek of Ellinger; two brothers, Joe and John Tomastik, both of Temple; and a number of grandchildren. Pallbearers were Raymond and Bennie Brasher of Eagle Lake, Albert Marek of Pleasanton, Frank Pavlet Jr. of Dayton, Edward and Leonard Petrosky of Columbus, Wm.
