Mr. Bernhard Tiemann Journeys to Last Home

Brief notice was given in last issue of the Mercury regarding the death of a former citizen of this place, Mr. Bernhard Tiemann, which occurred Tuesday night of last week at the home of his son, Mr. Adolf Tiemann, in HalletsvIlle. Burial took place in the Weimar Masonic Cemetery Thursday evening, with Rev. Paul Piepenbrok. local Lutheran minister. officiating., and Messrs. John Breitkreuz of Weimar, Victor and Oscar Tiemann of Halletsville, August Tiemann and Herman Andreas of Nelsonville, and Adolf Teltschik of Palo Pinto county acting as pall bearers.

Mr. Bernhard Tiemann was born March 6. 1846, in Westphalen. Germany. He was united in marriage to Miss Wilhelmine Rosenbaum on Aug. 1, 1867, and came to America in the year 1870. The first three years the young couple were in America they lived in the Brenham section, then moved to the New Bielau community, and from there to Weimar in 1908, where they lived up to the death of his beloved wife Jan. 3. 1931, when Mr. Tiemann moved to Halletsville to make his home with his son. Mr. Adolf Tiemann.

Mr. Tiemann is survived by six children, 29 grandchildren and 28 greatgrandchildren. The living children are Mrs. Mina Andreas of Houston, Mr. Henry Tiemann of Chapel Hill, Mrs. 0. Breitkreuz of Weimar. Mrs. Rudolf Teltschik of Strawn, Mr. Adolf Tiemann. of Halletsville and Mr. Willie Tiemann of Nelsonville. Two children of this couple died in infancy.

During the many years Mr. Tiemann lived in and around Weimar, he proved himself a quiet., inoffensive, peaceable, good citizen and neighbor. He was honest, upright, with a cheerful word of greeting for everyone and his passIng from among us is deeply and sincerely deplored by all. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his bereaved ones.

Mrs. Bernard Tiemann Dies Near Halletsville

Many friends throughout this section were saddened last Saturday when news of the death of Mrs. Wilhelmina Tiemann, beloved wife of Mr. B. Tiemann of this city was received here. Her death occurred at the home of their son, Mr. Adolf Tiemann, near Halletsville. Following a paralytic stroke some three weeks ago, Mrs. Tiemann was removed to the home of her son near Halletsville, where she died. The remains were brought to this city Sunday and laid to rest in the Masonic Cemetery, Rev. Paul Piepenbrok, local Lutheran minister, officiating. A large crowd of mourning relatives and friends was present to pay the last tribute to this good woman.

Pall bearers were Messrs. Edgar Teltschik, Ernest and Victor Tiemann, John and Arthur Breitkreuz, Herman Andreas, all grandsons of the deceased.

Mrs. Wilhelmina Henriette Tiemann, nee Rosenbaum, was born Sept. 16, 1949 in Oppendorf, Westphalia, Germany was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at an early age. She was married in her place of birth to Mr. Bernhard Tiemann on Aug. 1, 1867. Eight children were born to this union, two of whom are dead.

The couple came to this country in 1871, first settling near Brenham. The lived there three years, then moved to the New Bielau section. Afterward they moved to Weimar and have lived in this city for the past twenty years. At time of death she was 81 years, 3 months and 18 days old. Her survivors are her aged husband, Mr. Bernhard Tiemann, children, Mrs. Herman Andreas, Houston; Henry Tiemann of Chappell Hill; Mrs. Otto Breitkreuz, Weimar; Mrs. Rudolph Teltschik, Strawn; Adolph Tiemann, Halletsville; Willie Tiemann, Nelsonville; also 29 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Throughout her long life Mrs. Tiemann ever proved herself a good wife and mother, and the very best of friends and neighbors. Of naturally kindly disposition, she took friendly interest in all those about her, and was always a welcome guest in every circle of life in which she moved. To her bereaved ones our heartfelt sympathy is extended.

MR. ERNEST TIETSCHERT

Mr. Ernest E. Tietschert, 78, prominent citizen of the Shaws Bend community passed out of this life early today.

Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow at 2:30, and interment will take place in Brune Cemetery.

Mr. Tietschert was born in Breslau, Germany, and came to Colorado county in 1883, settling near Shaws Bend, where he lived until his death.

He was one of the substantial and highly respected citizens of the county. He is survived by wife and six children, Willie and Max of this city, Mrs. L. J. Struss of Shaws Bend, Mrs. Frank Miller of Houston, Mrs. C. H. Walling of Georgetown and Mrs. Raymond Fowler of this city, to all of whom the sympathy of the community is extended.

Columbus, Tex., Feb. 7.--OttoTeitschert[sic], 26 years old, a native of ColoradoCounty, died in San Antonio Tuesday morning. The body wasshipped to Columbus in the evening and buried in Shaws Bend[Brune] Cemetery Wednesday afternoon. Rev. HansKrause of the Lutheran Church in Fayetteville conducted theservices. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. ErnstTeitschert[sic]; four sisters, Mrs. Frank Miller,Mrs. Louis Strauss[sic], Misses Frieda and HildaTeitschert[sic] and two brothers, Willie and MaxTeitschert[sic]. All reside here except Mrs.Miller, who lives in Glidden.

William "Bill" Earl Tietschert, 83, of Shaws Bend, passed away June 25 at Columbus Nursing and Rehabilitation.

He was born May 6, 1925 in Columbus to Willie H. and Irene Dungen Tietschert. He was a retired gravel pit worker. He was confirmed July 16, 1939 by Pastor William H. Flachmeier at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Columbus. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy from Oct. 5, 1943 to May 17, 1946. His rank when discharged was ship's cook 3rd class.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Katherine Einkauf and husband Oscar and brother-in-law, Dennis Neuendorff.

He is survived by sister, Dorthy Neuendorff, of Bernardo; niece and nephews, Alan Neuendorff and wife Mary, Marvin Neuendorff, all of Bernardo, Janice Brasher and husband Charles of Huffman, Kerry Neuendorff and wife Annette of Frelsburg and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services took place June 28 at Henneke Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Mosley officiating. Inter-ment followed at Brune Cemetery in Shaws Bend.

Pallbearers were Alan, Marvin, Kerry, Richard and Jason Neuendorff and Charles Brasher.

Honorary Pallbearers were Lee Neuendorff and David Morris.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Annie Till, 76, Held Here Thursday

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Till, 76, whose death occurred suddenly on Tuesday of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Berger, were held at St. Michael’s Church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. Vaclav Bily read the burial rites. Interment was made in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Beanie Helmcamp, Emil Helmcamp, Clarence Skrovan, Verner Till, Victor Wanjura, Fred Berger, Richard Billeck, Louis Kubesch, John Guenther.

Mrs. Till was born in Austria on January 21. 1866, and with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Berger, came to America in the year 1872, the family settling in Fayette County.

She was married to Mr. John Till in the year 1887 at Dubina. The couple lived in the Dubina community until the death of Mr. Till several years ago. She was a member of the Catholic Church and St. Ann Society.

Survivors include eleven children. Mrs. Edmund Helmcamp, Mrs. Frank RIpper, Mrs. Joe F. Ulrich, Mrs. Charlie Berger, Mrs. Joe R. Ulrich, Charlie Till, all of Weimar; Albert Till and Mrs. Jim Skrovan of El Campo; Bill Till of San Antonio; Henry Till of San Antonio and Mrs. Fred Berger of Weimar. Also surviving are one sister. Mrs. Fred Billeck, and 20 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Till, Charles R.

Final Rites Held For Charlie Till, 61, Suicide Victim

Funeral services for Charles R. Till, 61, who was found dead in his car near Weimar last Friday, were held Sunday morning at Hubbard Funeral Home and St. Michael’s Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Msgr. Anthony Drozd officiated, assisted by Rev. Thomas Flanagan and Rev. Benton Thurmond.

Mr. Till had been missing since Wednesday, which was his birthday. Two colored employees of Montgomery Electric Co. found him slumped in his car, which had been parked at the same spot near the old boneyard northeast of town since that day.

A .22 calibre rifle was beside him and he had been shot once in the forehead. Justice of the Peace A. J. Ratliff gave a verdict of suicide.

Born here Feb. 6, 1896, he was the oldest son of John and Annie Till. He married Miss Marie Knebel here Oct. 29, 1917. For about the past 15 years he had worked at Hubbard & Herder, until recently called the Jno C. Hubbard Co. and prior to that had been employed by H. H. Knebel, on the county crew, and by Contractor Steve Kosler.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Erwin (Leona) Wind and five grandchildren, of Houston; eight sisters, Mrs. Edmund Helmcamp, Mrs. Frank Ripper, Mrs. Joe F. Ulrich, Mrs. Charlie Berger,Mrs. Joe R. Ulrich, Mrs. Edward Berger, all of Weimar, and Mrs. Jim Skrovan of El Campo; and three brothers, Henry Till of Weimar Albert Till of El Campo and William Till of Columbus. One sister preceded him in death.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Frankie Berger, Herbert Ulrich, Edwin Knebel, Verner Till, Steve Zapalac, John F. Heger Jr., Frankie Thac, Raymond Knebel and Eugene Ulrich.

FINAL RITES ARE HELD HERE FOR MRS. JOE R. TILL

Funeral services for Mrs. Joe R. TIll, 43, life-long resident of Weimar and Weimar area and widely-known throughout this section, whose death occurred Saturday in a San Antonio hospital, were held here Tuesday morning at St. Michael's Church, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Szymanski, assisted by Rev. L. Blinka, officiating.

Mrs. Till was the daughter of Mrs. Agnes Bohac, long time resident of the Ammannsville section, and prior to her marriage was Miss Edna Bohac. She was married seventeen years ago to Joe R. Till, prominent Weimar business man and a longtime member of Weimar's city council, governing body. Of amiable disposition and having hundreds of friends here, prior to her marriage Mrs. Till was associated with the H. R. Knebel ladies ready-to-wear department and she is remembered as an efficient, courteous and talented associate of the store.

In recent months, Mrs. Till had been in ill health and taken recently to a San Antonio Hospital. She passed away there Saturday.

Survivors include her husband, Joe R. Till; a son, J. R. of San Antonio; a step-son, Harris Till of Eagle Lake; five sisters, Mrs. Richard Neiser of Holman, Mrs. Louis Tumis and Mrs. Louis Shumbera of Ammannsville, Mrs. John Janak of Columbus, Mrs. Joe Moitel of Seymour; four brothers, Mike, Jerome, and Albert Bohac of Ammannsville, Frank of Rosenberg; and her mother, Mrs. Agnes Bohac of Ammannsville.

Burial was in the St. Michael's Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Hy. J. Laas, Emil Fahrenthold, W. H. Hollien. Dr. J. J. Mensik, Ed Rabel, Gus Watzlavick, Rudolf Mozisek, J. S. Rypple.

Till, Henry Herbert Jr.

Funeral for Wreck Victim Held Sunday

Funeral services for Henry H. Till Jr., who died in Saturday morning’s wreck east of Weimar, were held Sunday afternoon at Hubbard Funeral Home and St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with burial in the Church cemetery.

Rev. Albert Hubertus and Rev. Sigmund Wojciechowski officiated.

Henry Herbert Till Jr. was born July 15, 1943, near Weimar, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Till Sr., and lived here all his life. After graduation from Bishop Forest High School in 1961, he worked as a store clerk briefly, then as a mechanic, the past seven months with Parker Bros., gravel miners, near Columbus.

He is survived by his parents here; a brother, Pfc. Hilliard Till, in Vietnam; and his grandmother, Mrs. Anton Freis Sr. of Weimar.

Pallbearers were Joe Horak, Ronald Wick, Henry Hudec Jr., Weinert Grohmann, Joe Chamrad and Eugene Grohmann.

Death of Pretty and Popular YoungLady

Many hearts throughout this section weredeeply grieved Friday last when it was learned that MissHettie Gertrude Till, the pretty and popular 23-year-olddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Till, residing with herparents a few miles east of Weimar, had passed away, after abrief illness. The remains were laid to rest inSt.Michael's Cemetery Saturdayafternoon, Rev. Jos. Szymanski officiating in an impressiveburial service.

Miss Hettie was an unusually attractiveyoung lady, and very popular among her friends andassociates. A short time ago she was called to High Hill toassist at the bedside of a sick relative. While there shewas taken ill, but had apparently recovered. Soon after herreturn home, she was again taken ill, and despite the bestefforts of physicians, family and friends, passed away. Herdeath has caused an aching void in the family circle, aswell as in the hearts of scores of friends throughout thissection.

Hilliard H. Till, 57, of Weimar, died May6 of a heart attack at his home. Funeral services were heldThursday, May 8 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Weimarwith Father John C. Bily officiating.

Born Sept. 8, 1945 in Weimar, he was theson of Henry and Martha Freis Till.

He attended St. Michael School, BishopForest High School in Schulenburg, and Weimar HighSchool.

He served in the United States Army fromNov. 16, 1965 to Nov. 16, 1971, when he was honorablydischarged. He served during the Vietnamconflict.

Mr. Till married Brenda Wittmann on July27, 1968 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in LaGrange.

He was employed, for over 20 years, withLone Star Beer Distributor in Weimar until it closed. He wascurrently employed at Stemco Sand and Gravel inHolman.

He was a member of St. Michael CatholicChurch.

Over the years, Hilliard had made manyfriends. He will be remembered for his sense of humor. Ifyou knew him, he made you laugh once or twice.

He was a loving husband, father andgrandfather. He will be missed my many.

Mr. Till is survived by his wife, BrendaTill of Weimar; daughters, Shannon Till Rosenauer andhusband Ronald and Shelly Till Munsch and husband Charles,all of Weimar; and three grandchildren, Justin Rosenauer,McKenna Munsch and Amberlee Munsch.

He was preceded in death by his parentsand his only brother, Henry Till Jr.

One of Our Oldest Settlers Passes On

Mr. John Till, one of the oldest and best known farmers of this section, died at the family home east of town on Monday evening of last week. The funeral took place at St. Michael’s Cemetery Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock, Revs. Jos. Szymanski and John Morkovsky performing the last sad rites. The pall bearers were his four sons, Messrs. Charles, Albert, Willie and Henry Till, and two grandsons, Bennie and Emil Helmcamp.

Mr. Till was 73 years old at time of death. He was born in Austria, and came to this country at the age of 14 years, first settling at Schulenburg. He was united in marriage to Miss Annie Beyer, Oct. 20, 1887. The couple lived in Fayette county four years, and then moved to Colorado county, where they lived up to the time of his death. He is survived by his widow, and eleven children, as follows: Mrs. Edmund Helmcamp, Mrs. Frank Ripper, Mrs. Joe F. Ulrich, Mrs. Charlie Berger, Mrs. Joe R. Ulrich of Weimar, Mrs. Jim Skrovan of El Campo, Mrs. Edward Berger of Weimar, Mr. Charles Till of Weimar, Mr. Albert Till of El Campo, Mr. Willie Till of Columbus and Mr. Henry Till of Weimar; seventeen grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Till was a man well and favorably known throughout this section. He was upright, honest, a man positive in his convictions, a good provider, a devoted husband and father, a kindly neighbor and friend, and he will be sadly missed in the community where he lived for so long a time.

JOE TILL, GINNER HERE 30 YEARS, SUCCUMBS

Funeral services for Joe R. Till, 58, lifelong resident of this area and a Weimar cotton ginner for more than 30 years, were held from Hubbard Funeral Home and St. Michael’s Church Monday morning, with interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Mr. Till expired at Youens Hospital at 5:10 o'clock Saturday evening, June 2. He had been in the hospital since suffering a heart stroke about five weeks previously.

Mr. Till’s son, Rev. Joe R. Till of Blessing, sang the funeral mass; Rev. Carlos Quintana of Yoakum was deacon nd Rev. John Wagner of El Campo sub-deacon; both ae classates(sic) of Rev. Till. Master of ceremonies was Rev. Alois Goertz of Weimar, and the minor ministers ere Joe Adamcik, Louis Fritz, and Victor Goertz, all of St. John’s Seminary, San Antonio.

Msgr. Anthony F. Drozd of Weimar gave the sermon in St. Michael’s church, and Msgr. Patrick J. Geehan, vicar-general of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, conducted graveside services. Several neighboring priests also attended the funeral.

Mr. Till was a native of the section a few miles east of Weimar and moved into Weimar as a youth. He was born March 11, 1893, the son of Stephen and Theresa Beyer Till. With the Seifert Brothers, he bought the Leidolf gin in 1918, and about ten years later bought his partners’ interests. He continued to operate the gin until this year, when he sold it to Messrs. Frank and Henry Herbert Seifert, and retired. About a week later he suffered the heart stroke from which he never fully recovered.

A member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, he also belong to the Knights of Columbus and Hermann Sons and was an honorary assistant chief of the Weimar Fire Department in which he had served more than 20 years.

Mr. Till’s wife, the former Miss Edna Bohac, whom he married in 1924, preceded him in death in 1940.

He is survived by two sons, Harris Till of Alvin and Rev. Joe R. Till, Blessing; four grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Hilda Seifert and Mrs. Herman (Mary) Teltschik of Weimar, Mrs. Albert (Ida) Klockmann of Eagle Lake, and Mrs. Adolf (Theresa) Skrobanek of Houston. A son, Leroy,died in 1920 at the age of four, and a sister, Mrs. Chas. (Annie) Helmcamp, died in July, 1950.

Pallbearers at the funeral were Chas. F. Kalous, Edward J. Seifert, George Kusey, Anton Schindler, Joe Schindler, Joe Neiser, Emil Neiser, Ed Bohac and Emil Mican.

Death of Beloved Little Son of JoeTill

Our city and people were saddened Mondayat noon when it was learned that the bright and lovablelittle 5-year-old son of Jos. Till of this city--Leroy--wasdead. the little fellow was taken ill Saturday last withsome form of throat trouble, which rapidly grew worse, anddespite every effort of physicians and relatives and friendsthe little fellow passed away after a brief illness. Thefuneral took place at St.Michael's Cemetery Tuesdayafternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. Szymanski officiating in thepresence of a large crowd of sympathizing relatives andfriends. Lucille Till

Lucille Till, 87 of Garwood passed away Sunday, February 3 in Austin Heart Hospital.

She was born June 27, 1920 in Nada the daughter of John J. Bittner and Cecelia Leopold Bittner.

Lucille was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, The Gadabouts, Christian Mother’s Society, Perpetual Adoration, and Past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America Court #1595-Our Lady of the Rosary.

Till, Jr. of Garwood; daughters, Helen Fojtik of Wharton, Elaine Griffith and husband, Milo, of Dayton, Virginia “Jenny” Tait and husband, Bob, of Columbus, Linda Hartley and husband, Dennis, of Columbus; Rudy Till, III and wife, Sharon, of Garwood, Andrew Till, Roy Till and wife, Betty; sisters, Rose Staff, all of Nada, Isabel Reinhardt of San Antonio; brothers, Albert (Mike) Bittner and Alois Bittner both of Nada; 19 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.

A parish rosary was held Tuesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Nada.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada with Father Anthony Boateng-Mensah (Father Tony) officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Nada. Henneke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Lee Griffith, Erik Griffith, Ryan Till, Charles Tait, Blair Hartley and Fernando Montes.

Honorary pallbearers were Lynn Staff and Jeff Dugie.

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha MarieTill, 65, of Rt. 3, Weimar, were held Wednesday, Feb. 14from St. Michael's Catholic Church, with burial intheparish cemetery.

Father Charles Carolanofficiated.

Mrs. Till died February 12 at YouensMemorial Hospital after a heart attack.

A lifelong resident of Weimar, she wasborn October 19, 1913, a daughter of Anton and Josephine(Heger) Freis. She was married to Henry Till on October 20,1931, at St. Michael's Church.

Her husband survives, along with one son,Hilliard Till of Weimar; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs.Albert E. Grohmann of Weimar; and one brother, Anton FreisJr. of Weimar. She was preceded in death by a son, HenryHerbert Till, and a brother, John Freis.

SAD DEATH OF AN ESTIMABLE LADY

Our people and community were immeasurable saddened Wednesday morning when the news flashed over the phones lines and passed from one to another that Mrs. Mathilda Till, the beloved wife of Mr. Jos. Till,was dead, after a brief illness from influenza and pneumonia . Not a great many of her friends knew even of her illness, and the shock was naturally greater when news came of her death. The funeral took place at 10 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Michael's Cemetery, Rev. Jos. Szymanski officiating. Mrs. Till was formerly Miss "Tillie” Seifert youngest daughter of A. Seifert and wife of this city, was married a few years ago to Jos. Till, and was one of the most beloved and popular ladies of our community. Possessed of a cheerful temperament, kind and thoughtful of those about her, a dutiful daughter and wife, she was loved by all who knew her, and her death at such an early age in life has saddened the hearts of hundreds of friends throughout this section. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the the bereaved family in the irreparable loss they have sustained.

Ryan Patrick Till, 28, of Garwood, passed away Wednesday, April 9 in Houston.

He was born January 11, 1980 in Eagle Lake the son of Rudolph John Till, III and Sharon Kay (Novak) Till.

Ryan was employed as a technician for Remote Underwater Vehicles.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lucille Till.

Ryan is survived by his parents, Rudy III and Sharon Till of Garwood; sister, Marcie Pitus and husband, John of San Antonio; grandfather, Rudolph J. Till, Jr. of Garwood; and grandmother, Agnes Novak of Ganado.

Parish rosary was held Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Funeral services followed at 2:30 p.m. from St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Anthony Boateng-Mensah officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus.

Till, Stephen

A strange and fatal accident happened to Stephan Till, a German farmer, who lived about three miles northeast of town, last Saturday night. He was returning from town In a buggy, and had stopped at his pasture gate, which is not vary far distant from his residence, when in some way, either from being run over or kicked or pawed by his horse, he was Injured so seriously that he died the following day about noon. He was rational after the accident, but could give no account of same, except that as he was trying to got back In the buggy he got hurt-how he did not know. His body bore no bruises, but he was injured internally, and Dr. C. G. Cook, his attending physician, pumped out quite a lot of blood from him. Till was an Industrious farmer and very well liked by his associates. His remains were laid to rest at St. Michael's cemetery Monday afternoon, a large crowd witnessing the last sad rites

Last Rites For Mrs. Theresa Till Held Here Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Theresa Till, 74. were held from the family residence in Weimar with services at St. Michael's Church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning. Interment was made in St. Michael's Cemetery, with the Rev. Emil Vinklarek officiating.

Mrs. Till passed away in St. Joseph's Infirmary in Houston after several days of illness. She was 74 years, three months and ten days of age.

Pallbearers were six of her grandchildren, Edgar Helmcamp, Leo Teltschik, Harris Till, Leonard Seifert, Arnold Klockmann, and Johnnie Skrovanek.

Born Theresa Beyer in Austria in 1867. Mrs. Till came to this country with her parents in 1869, landing at Galveston and later moving to this section. She married Stephen Till, who died May 11, 1902.

She is survived by six children, Mrs. Mary Teltschik of Weimar, Mrs. Chas. Helmcamp of Weimar, Mrs. Adolf Skrovanek of Houston. Mr. Joe Till of Weimar. Mrs. Joe Seifert of Weimar and Mrs. A. A. Klockmanri of Eagle Lake.

Other survivors are twenty-seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Mercury extends sympathy to the bereaved survivors.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) “Sister Babe” Tillman

On January 27, 1926, in Eagle Lake, a baby girl was born to Percy Williams and Texana Foster. They named her Elizabeth.

Lizzie attended school in Eagle Lake, (R.B. Area). She confessed her life to Christ at an early age at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. W.M. Banks.

Later, she moved her membership to White Cloud Baptist Church under the Pastoral Leadership of Rev. T. Gordon. She remained faithful with the Usher's Auxiliary, under the Pastoral leadership of Rev. O. Rhodes, until she became ill in February of 1994.

She departed this life, Sunday October 1, at 5:15 p.m. at Oak Bend Medical Center in Richmond.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Leo Tillman, Jr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Tillman, Jr.; son, Obie Tillman; daughter, Rose Brown; two brothers, Charles Williams and John Lee Haynes; and two grandchildren, Shayne Tillman and Tasha Powell.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her caregivers; daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Kado Powell, Jr. of Sealy; sons, Douglas (Ada) Tillman, John (Linda)

Lewis James Tillman, 33, died Tuesday,Aug. 2, 1994.

Born Sept. 28, 1960, in Colorado County,he was the son of George Jr. and Alma Tillman. He attendedEagle Lake schools and graduated from Rice Consolidated HighSchool in 1979. He attended several junior colleges where heparticipated in track and field events. He served in the U.S. Army after having enlisted in 1984. Mr. Tillman was amember of the White Cloud Baptist Church in EagleLake.

Funeral services were held Aug. 6, at White Cloud Baptist Church with Rev. Obie Rhodes officiating. Interment followed in Boykins Cemetery in Matthews. Ben Davis Funeral Home, Columbus, was in charge of arrangements.

Rufus “Red” Tillman

On December 19, 1931, a son, Rufus Tillman, was born to the late Frank and Genieva “Mama Genie” Tillman of Eagle Lake.

He was enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. On August 3, 1953 he received an honorable discharge.

He was united in Holy Wedlock to the late Earnestine Grant Tillman, in 1956.

Rufus is preceded in death by his wife, Earnestine; both parents; brother, Raymond; sister, Mattie Lee; granddaughters, Belinda and Ivory; great-grandson; grandson, Carlos; and two special friends, Scissor McTear and Gerald Flowers.

“Red” leaves to cherish his memories Rufus Tillman (Janice); Calvin Tillman; Kirk Jones (Elizabeth); Dorothy Stovall (Alonzo). Doris Tucker; Ruthie and Sandra Tillman; brother, Ruben Tillman (Deloise); special godson, Greg Frazier; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one niece and nephew; a special cousin and devoted friend, Margaret “Margo” McTear; cousin, Louise and Ruby White, Shelia, Sonny Cloud and Preston Hemphill; devoted friend, Martha Holloway; and many other relatives and friends.

DEATH OF MRS. TILLY

Died of pneumonia in this city at 6:30 p.m. Monday last, Mrs. Susan Tilly, aged 81, wife of Mr. S. Tilly. Her demise was not unexpected, as the kind friends who attended her bedside for sixteen days foresaw that her wonderful vitality would be insufficient to combat the dread disease.

Tuesday afternoon her funeral services, including beautiful solos by Mrs. McMahon and Miss Gussie Stafford, were held in the Methodist church, of which she was a life-long member, the Rev. J. W. McMahon officiating. The chancel, organ and her memorial window were draped in mourning, and all hearts felt the gloom occasioned by the removal of her presence. Mr. McMahon spoke with feeling of her love for all humanity and of her deep attachment and tender thought for this place especially, evidenced in one of her last remarks--”What will become of my Columbus?”--concentrating in that agonized inquiry her intense interest in the town collectively and individually. Kindness was the efflorescence of her nature, and the severe trials life held for her lost their bitterest venom through her unselfishly finding others who needed her ministry. The most of her long life had been spent here, and like arrows of light from the eternal quiver of the sun thoughts of her simple faith, her loving trust, will illumine the memories of those who knew her, and her influence will be felt far beyond our ken.

A long procession followed her to the city cemetery, where Mr. McMahon reverently committed “ashes to ashes and dust to dust.” The CITIZEN extends condolences to the bereaved husband.

TILOTTA

Damien Lee Tilotta, 59, died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at his home in Columbus, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Damien was born in Houston on December 12, 1942, to George and Rose Tilotta. He moved to Columbus in 1975. On May 25, 1984, he wed Charlotte Collins.

Damien had recently retired, after 23 years of service with Columbus Independent School District.

He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Mary Jo Tilotta. Survivors include his wife; mother; sister, Karen Morgan and husband Jackie; brother George and wife Sofie; brother Jim and wife Sharon.

Damien will be especially remembered for his love for the outdoors, hunting and fishing and vintage American automobiles.

He will be missed for his kindness, his soft spoken ways and his loyalty to family and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at Henneke Funeral Home on October 5, 2002. Pallbearers were Charlie Barrett, Richard Davis, Armando Medrano, Joel Rau, Gordon Richter and Jim Story. [Place of interment unknown]

The death of Joseph Wesley Tinkler ofRock Island came as a shock to the entire community. Mr.Tinkler was born November 20, 1876 in Weimar, this county.He passed away February 9, 1945 at the age of 68. He was theson of the late James Watt Tinkler of Rock Island andHouston who was one of the pioneer settlers of ColoradoCounty.

Mr. Tinkler was married to Miss BerthaMoore of Yoakum, February 1902, and to this union two sonswere born. Kyle D. of Houston and Wayne M. of Galveston whosurvive, also his heartbroken wife, five grandchildren andone sister, Mrs. Cole Shelbourne of Houston and one brotherWalt F. Winkler of Edinburg.

Funeral services were held from the RockIsland Methodist Church of which he had been a life-longmember and official, Saturday morning at ten o'clock, hispastor, the Rev. J. H. Thompson officiating. He was faithfuland loyal to his church, having served as Sunday Schoolsuperintendent and steward for many years.

The body was taken overland to Houstonwhere interment was made Saturday afternoon. Sympathy isoffered to the family in their great sorrow.

Johanna Tipovsky Held Here Monday

Funeral services were held at St. Michael’s Church on Monday morning for Miss Johanna Tipovsky, 94, with the Rev. Joe Hamala officiating. Interment was in St. Michael’s cemetery.

Johanna Tipovsky was born at Staric, Moravia, Austria, in the year of 1852 and came to America in 1901 with her only sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Malinovsky, with whom she made her home until the death of Mrs. Malinovsky several years ago. She had reached the age of 93 years and 10 months. She passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. Joe. J. Dusek, in the New Bielau community.

Survivors include four nieces, Mrs. Joe. J. Dusek, Sr., Mrs. Jerry J. Valchar, Sr., Mrs. Joe Vanzura and Mrs. Emial Hrmis.

Pallbearers were Joe J. Dusek, Cyril Dusek, Emil Walla, Julius Ermis, Jerry Valchar, Jr., and John Mazac.

Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Tipp, 87, of EagIe Lake, mother of Mrs. Wm. Raabe of Weimar, were held Jan. 3 at Mill Bauer Funeral Home, Eagle Lake, with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.

Mrs. Tipp died Jan. 12 In Eagle Lake Community Hospital after a long illness.

The former Minnie Miska, she was born June 19, 1883, at Dubina, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miska. Since her marriage to August TIpp in Weimar on Aug. 2, 1904, she had lived near Eagle Lake. Mr. Tipp died in December 1946.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wm. (Louise) Raabe of Weimar and Mrs. Ophelia Raabe of Eagle Lake; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Dora Roberts of Eagle Lake: five sisters and one brother; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Terry Wright, Adolph Raabe, Walter Corliss, Roger Birdwell, John Birdwell, and Quinto Botino.

‘Jodie’ Tipton, 68, Heart Attack Victim, Buried

Funeral services wecr[sic] held Sunday afternoon, March 10, for C. L. (“Jodie”] Tipton, 68-year-old farm worker of Oakland, who suffered a fatal heart attack Friday morning while shopping in the Mayes store at Oakland.

He had lived at Oakland the past 20 years.

Services were held at Hubbard Funeral Home, with Rev. Howard MacAllister, pastor of First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery, with veterans’ color guard.

Mr. Tipton was born Feb. 4, 1895, at Blooming Grove, Texas. He was a veteran of World War I army service.

Surviving him are five sisters, Mrs. Bunie Stubblefield of Hillsboro, Mrs. Marty Farmer of Cashmere, Washington, Mrs. Callie Graves of Ft. Worth and Mrs. Ben Woods and Mrs. Lilly Warren of Dallas; and two brothers, Dave Tipton of Dallas and J. B. Tipton of Garwood.

Funeral services for J. B. Tipton were held Wednesday, June 5 at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with the Rev. J. Melburn Sibley, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Eagle Lake, officiating.

Tipton passed away June 2 at the Eagle Lake Community Hospital. Burial was held at the Lakeside Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Dulany Funeral Home.

Mr. Tipton was born August 8, 1907 in Blooming Grove to Mr. and Mrs. John Tipton. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Case on October 12, 1928 in East Bernard. He farmed in the East Bernard area most of his life until he moved to Garwood 15 years ago where he and his wife managed the Texas Fried Chicken Restuarant[sic] until his health failed two years ago. Mr. Tipton was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife if 57 years, Betty Tipton of Garwood; one daughter, Bernice Guthrie of Garwood; one son, Donald Tipton of San Felipe; three sisters, Callie Brown of Ft. Worth, Ruby Woods, and Lilly Warren both of Dallas, 11 grand children and 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and loved ones.

Tkac, Rudolf

Rudolf Tkac, 76, Missing 3 Days, Found Dead in Tank

The body of 76-year-old Rudolf Tkac, missing since Saturday from the home of his nephew, Anton Friedel, in the Osage section, was found Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock in a stock pond in the F. C. (Buddy) Seifert pasture about a mile from the Friedel home.

Sheriff J. O. Walker had led the search for the missing man since Monday morning. His deputies found the body floating about 10 feet from the tank edge after a search that had covered a wide area of woods and farmland.

Died of Natural Causes

Justice of the Peace A. J. Ratliff, who held the inquest, gave a verdict of death from natural causes, believing the old man had dropped dead, probably from a stroke, and then fallen into the water. The small amount of water in the lungs indicated death was not due to drowning, he said. Time of his death was estimated as about Monday morning.

Mr. Tkac’s hat and cane were found on a small knoll beside the tank, and he was fully clothed although one shoe was untied. Friends who were familiar with his lifelong habit of creek-bathing, in nearly every kind of weather and even at this advanced age, believed he may have been preparing to go bathing.

His wandering off alone was also not considered unusual, for he had lived alone for many years before going to live with his nephew about three months ago, and often had been known to stay overnight in the woods. It was believed he may have been trying to find his way into Weimar, where his sister, Mrs. Frances Friedel, lives, and lost his way.

Funeral services were held f rom Hubbard Funeral Home Tuesday evening at 5:30, with Rev. Walter J. Cartwright officiating, and interment was in the Weimar Masonic Cemetery.

Mr. Tkac was born in Czechoslovakia April 9, 1876, the son of Frank and Anna Gucky Tkac, and came to this country in 1884, his family settling on a farm near Engle. He had lived in the Weimar area about 15 years. Some time ago he had seriously injured his back when a stepladder broke, causing him to fall. After that he lived briefly with his sister, Mrs. Friedel, here, later in a rest home at Schulenburg, and about three months ago moved in the Friedel home at Osage.

Survivors are his widow, who lives in San Antonio, two sons, Raymond and Vladik Tkac,both of San Antonio; two brothers, Joe of Fort Worth and Ludwig of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Kresta of Shiner and Mrs. Frances Friedel of Weimar; and a stepson, Joe Tkac of Weimar.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie Louise Tolbirt, a lifetime resident of Columbus, were held Tuesday, Aug. 31, from Henneke Funeral Home. The Rev. Henry Teems, minister of the First Baptist Church of Columbus, officiated. Burial was in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery.

Mrs. Tolbirt died in Columbus Community Hospital early Monday. She had been in ill health for several years.

She was a daughter of Hattie Auerbach and William Robert Sronce Sr., born Nov. 19, 1918 in Columbus. She and John W. Tolbirt were married Jan. 19, 1939. Before retiring, Mrs. Tolbirt did secretarial work, and was employed by the Colorado County Federal Savings and Loan Association when the company was first organized.

Survivors include her husband, of Columbus; a daughter, Mrs. Louis (Nancy) Hobizal of San Antonio; 2 sisters, Mrs. T. W. (Laura) Glithero and Mrs. Owen (Lillian) Mehrens, both of Columbus; 2 brothers, William Robert Sronce Jr. and Gus L. Sronce, both of Columbus;. and one grandchild, Michelle Elizabeth Hobizal.

Pallbearers were James Dunn Seymour, Oliver Wegenhoft; Red Tolbirt, Jimmy Peters, Buddy Prause and W. R. Sronce IV.

Funeral services were held for R. C. "Judge" Tolbirt, Jr. Wednesday, November 19 at St. John's Epsicopal(sic) Church in Columbus under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home with the Reverend Joseph Spitzler officiating.

Burial was at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus.

Judge Tolbirt, Jr. was born December 18, 1938. in La Grange to Ruthven Champion Tolbirt, Sr. and Winona Zwiegel Tolbirt.

Mr. Tolbirt was a computer programer and he was self-employed. He was a lifetime residence. He was affiliated with President Of Percheron Horse Association of Texas.

Survivor is his mother, Winona Tolbirt of Columbus.

Pallbearers were Buddy Rau, Melvin Huebel, Fred Jensen, Nelson Mackenroth, Guthrie Blahuta, Jesse Kolenovsky, Leon Labay and Rusty Labay.

Funeral services for R. C. Tolbirt were held July 26 at St. John's Episcopal Church for R. C. Tolbirt with Father David Penticuff officiating.

Mr. Tolbirt was born in La Grange on March 30, 1913 to F. M. and Ruthven Champion Tolbirt and he passed away July 24, 1984 at his home.

He was a member of St. John's Church and the American Legion, having served in Europe with the 87th Infantry Division. He was also a member of the Blue Lodge, Council, Chapter, Commandery, Arabia Temple and Colorado Valley Shrine Club. He had achieved the honorary degree of Knight of the York Cross of Honor by having served as head of the Blue Lodge, Council, Chapter and Commandery of the Masonic Lodge of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Winona; one son, R. C. Tolbirt Jr,; two nieces, Nona Artusy and Linda Zwiegel; and two nephews, John and Bill Zwiegel

Toliver, Annie Lee

Died, in our city, last Sunday night, little ANNIE LEE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Toliver.

Her illness, though not protracted, was severe, and as we witnessed her painful struggles for breath as it grew shorter and more labored, we recognized Divine mercy when some pitying angel pushed the golden gates ajar and the soul of the little sufferer entered into rest. While all the earth seems bathed in a flood of radiance, silence and desolation reign in that home where the patter of childish feet and the ring of baby tones are forever hushed. The glowing brightness of nature without seems only to mock the darkness within. And this presents to our mind one of life’s problems which greet us with every new turned page. While silvery-haired age sits with folded hands, the life work all complete,calmly waiting the Master’s call, this little bud of promise, this unfulfilled hope, falls before the reaper’s sickle, and old age waits wearily on. These mysteries can only be solved when the dear God reveals to us His purposes and plans all finished, and we shall perceive with a vision from which all mortal mists have cleared away, that these sacrifices are not required of us in vain. Toliver, Annie Pearl

On the night of the 17th inst. Annie Pearl Toliver died of congestion, at the residence of Doctor John Toliver, Columbus, aged six years and six months. She was the oldest child of the late John D. and Emma Toliver. An interesting and promising child, her sudden death casts gloom of sadness over the numerous friends and relatives of the family. with whom Pearl was an especial favorite. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved mother. The funeral occurred from the residence of Doctor Toliver, on the 18th inst. and was largely attended by the people of Columbus and surrounding country. The funeral ceremony was conducted by Rev. Mr. McShan, Pastor of the Methodist Church, in this place. Little Pearl’s remains were laid beside those of her father in the Odd Fellows’ cemetery.

Toliver, Benjamin Franklin

Mr. Ben. F. Toliver, surveyor of Colorado county, died at his residence near this city last Monday morning of consumption. He was an odd citizen of the county, having been reared in Columbus, with a large number of relatives and friends, who mourn his loss. For over a year he has been in failing health, and his death was not unexpected. His long illness and suffering were borne with christian fortitude, and loving hands ministered to him with kindly and assiduous attention. His remains were committed to the dust last Monday afternoon in the Odd Fellows’ Rest, Rev. M. S. Hotchkiss conducting services at the home. A good man and citizen has gone to his reward, and his devoted wife and children have the sympathy of the community. Peace to his remains.

Toliver, Delores

Sister Delores Toliver

Sister Delores, affectionately known to many as "Bollie" was born to the late Henry and Lillie Toliver on December 12, 1943.

She attended the Riverside Colored School.

She confessed her life to Christ several years ago and was a faithful member of the Alleyton Church of Christ. She was employed at Columbus Inn for over 20 years which she enjoyed.

"Bollie" was a devoted mother, loving daughter, sister, auntie, grandmother, and best friend to many. She was someone who you could always count on and turn to whenever you need anything. She was a good listener who had a smile that touched everybody's heart. She never knew a stranger.

She departed this life on February 22. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Toliver, Jr., granddaughter, Jemasheila Jackson; sister, Ella Mae Toliver.

She leaves to cherish her memories a mother, Lillie Toliver ("Big Mama") of Glidden; eight children, Brenda (husband, Mark) and Rickey (wife, Lisa) of Eagle Lake, Debbie, Clifton, Leona. (wife, Mary), Sheila (husband Anthony), Rachel (husband, Sean) all of Columbus, and Carolyn (husband, Vince) of Crowley, Texas; 10 brothers, Obie (wife, Martha), LeRoy (wife, Flora), and Carey all of Houston, Billye (wife, Carolyn) of La Grange, Bennie, Laird, Clarence, Jay Lynn, Tommie (wife, Brinda) and Johnny (wife, Darlene) all of Columbus; three sisters, Myrtle (husband, Marvin) Houston, Lillie (husband, James), and Barbara both of Columbus; 23 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; three extended daughters, Sandra Glenn, Jesse Hargrove, and LaGeri Perrino; all of Columbus; a special extended son, Thurman Hurd of Houston and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Celebration was held Saturday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. at West Oaks Church of Christ in Columbus with Bro. Sherman Alexander officiating. Interment followed at Willing Workers Cemetery. Ben David Funeral Home of Columbus was in charge of arrangements

Pallbearers were Raymond Moore, Donald Ray Spears, Willie Stovall, Jr., Limmie Evans, Jr., Tim Fitzgerald, and Leon Scott.

Three deaths have occurred in town during the past week, which has cast a gloom over almost every home, Mrs. Martha Yates died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Heyser, on the 3d inst.; Mrs. Bettie Toliver, consort of Mr. Jas. A. Toliver, died at her home on the 6th, and little Willie Monroe, the 4-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam E. Monroe, died on the 8th instant. All were interred at the Odd Fellows’ Rest. The bereaved families and friends have our sincere condolence.

Death at Columbus

Died in this city September 6 of a lingering illness Mrs. Bettie Toliver, aged 52 years, daughter of Mr and Mrs William Yancey.  She was born and reared among us.  The years of her happy childhood and guileless youth sped swiftly away and at the age of 19 she was wedded to Jas. A Toliver, also of this city, who survives her, with their two daughters, Mrs Fannie Andrews of Beaumont, and Miss Jennie Toliver, also one son W.H. Toliver, residing here.  Five little mounds in the cemetery, so often bedewed with her tears, mark the resting place of little innocents committed awhile to her care, torn from her loving embrace, claimed by Him who gave.  When the red clouds of evening were arching low to the horizon, weeping relatives and friends stood around her bed with anguished hearts and silent prayers that would have stayed awhile Death's lingering hand, the pure spirit burst its prison bonds and floated far beyond our mortal ken.  Wide swung the pearly gates and when her sainted soul by angel bands was wafted in, amid the heavenly harmonies that greeted her sweet presence, heard ye not O, mourning friends, the childish loved ones gone before, as across the Elysian fields with outstretched hands they swiftly came, joyfully exclaiming " Mother is here! She is Here!"

Never was home more deeply shadowed.  Never did the long dark night of grief and pain more obscurely shut out all light and peace from an earthly abode

From life's pathway has departed the bloom, loving kindness so beautiful shed along the highways and byways marked by her dainty footprints.

\Mournfully we submit to the ordeal that deprives those near and dear to her of a guide and an inspiration, and from our midst removes an exemplary woman and a cherished friend.

May we not see thee waiting stand And while against the evening star the welcome of thy beckoning hand

Toliver

Ella Mae Toliver, 53, died Sunday August 5, 1995.
Born Jan. 14, 1942 in Columbus, she was the daughter of Henry and Lillie Toliver. She attended Riverside School in Columbus.

Funeral services were held Aug. 16 at Westoak Church of Christ in Columbus with Brother David McAffer officiating. Interment followed in Willing Workers Cemetery, Columbus. Ben Davis Funeral Home, Columbus, was in charge of arrangements.

Serving as pallbearers were Reginald Smithers Sr., Michael Coleman, Donald Ray Spears, Clarence Toliver, Leonard Toliver, Arthur Ray nd Kevin Long. Honorary pallbearers were Leroy Toliver, Cary Toliver, Johnnie Toliver; Tommie Toliver, Obie Toliver and Billie Toliver.

Ms. Toliver is survived by her mother, of Glidden; four sisters, Lillie Waddle of Glidden, Delores Toliver and Barbara Toliver, both of Columbus, and Myrtle Jones of Houston; 10 brothers, Leroy Toliver, Obie Toliver; Carey Toliver, Clarence Toliver and Jaylyn Toliver, all of Houston, Laird Toliver, Tommie Toliver and Johnnie Toliver, all of Glidden; seven children, Joe Toliver, Woodrow Brown, Dorothy Sims and Jeffery Perkins, all of Columbus, Deborah Spears of Eagle Lake, Janice Wright of Houston and Willie Toliver of San Antonio; a daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law; 12 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Toliver, James Asbury

Death of James A. Toliver.

Died in the city of Columbus, June 30th, James A. Toliver. of a lingering illness in his 69th year. He was born and reared in Columbus and lived there all his days except a short time he resided in San Antonio. The writer has known him and has been intimate with him since 1849. When a school boy he was a close student. possessed a brilliant mind and always led his class. In the latter fifties Columbus had the very best schools, taught by Profs. Riley, Scherer and Loomis. Under these able instructors. J. A Toliver received a good education. The civil war coming on, he put aside his books, joined Major R. L. Foard's company and went as a private soldier to the front. After the war he studied law and was admitted to the bar, but never practiced. He held various offices in the county-- justice of the peace. and member of the commissioners' court, sheriff and collector, postmaster, and up to the time of his death was county surveyor. In all of these positions he proved to be honest and efficient.

In 1869 he married Miss Bettie Yancy the beautiful daughter of William and Emily Yancy. To them was born eight children, two of whom, Mrs. Fannie Andrews of Columbus and Will H. Toliver of Galveston, still live. Mrs. Toliver his wife, died in 1902. [Interment in Odd Fellows Rest]

"Jim" Toliver was a good man, a good neighbor, punctual in visiting the sick and helping to bury the dead. His hospitality was unlimited. In his prosperity I have known him many times to take men who were attending court and unable to visit the hotels, to his house where they found shelter and something to eat. But he Is gone. Toliver, John Franklin

We sincerely condole with Mr. and Mrs. James A. Toliver in the loss of their little boy, John Franklin, who died on the night of the 4th inst. with measles, aggravated by typhoid fever. He was a bright, intelligent child, about five years of age, and a great favorite. He suffered severely in his last illness. About half past 4 o’clock Tuesday evening he was laid in his grave at the Odd Fellows’ Rest, a large number of sympathetic friends being present.

There is no death! An Angel form

Sally Toliver, Aged Local Negro, DiesTuesday Night

Death came to 90-year-old Sally Toliver,Columbus Negro woman who was a well-known figure to both her"white folks" and colored citizens, Tuesday night at about10:30 in the home next door to Columbus hospital where shehad lived for the past 60 years. Sally had been ill for 5year and had been unable to leave her bed for 2 1/2years.

Native of Colorado County, she had spenther entire life in and around Columbus. Her 2nd husband,Walter Toliver, died about 1938.

Sally had worked for the late OscarZumwalt and the late Mrs. Bettie Walker and other Columbusfamilies. She was charter member of St. Paul MethodistChurch.

Funeral services will be held in thechurch Sunday afternoon at 1:30 and burial will be in theoldCity cemetery. Rev. La Valle Lowewill officiate and Robinson Funeral home will be incharge.

A son, Earl, of Houston, died earlier andshe leaves 2 other sons, Clifton, of Columbus, and Elbert ofLos Angeles, Calif; 4 grandchildren, and 6great-grandchildren.

Two funeral ceremonies were performed at the Odd Fellows' Rest last Sunday afternoon, when the bodies of Mrs. Sarah T. Toliver, wife of Mr. Ben Toliver, and Miss Mattie Crittenden, sister-in-law of your townsman, Mr. R. Phares, were laid to rest within an hour of each other. Revs. M. S. Hotchkiss and V. R. Stapp officiated at the former, and Rev. J. D. Ray at the latter obsequies. Peace to the departed.

Mrs. Sarah T. Toliver, consort of the late Mr. Ben F. Toliver died at her residence in this city last Saturday night, after a brief illness. She was attacked with convulsions a short time previous to her demise from which she never completely rallied. The deceased was raised in this city and numbers a large number of our people among her cherished friends. Five children and numerous relatives and friends mourn her untimely demise. Her remains were committed to earth last Sunday afternoon at Odd Fellow’s Rest, Revs. V. R. Stapp and M. S. Hotchkiss jointly performing the sad rites. Peace to her memory.

Toliver, Thomas

Former CHS Star Toliver Killed in Club Shooting

Thomas Toliver, 23, a former Columbus Cardinal basketball star, was shot and killed following an argument at the Riverside Terrace Club in Columbus in the early morning hours of Christmas Day.

Theopolis Lewis, 37, of Columbus was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting. Bond was denied and he remains in the Colorado County jail.

Lewis turned himself in to Texas Ranger Ray Nutt several hours after the shooting.

Columbus Police Chief William Smith said the shooting
occurred at approximately 12:33 a.m. Thursday in the club parking lot following an argument inside the club over Karen Abney Lewis, the estranged wife of Theopolis Lewis.

The police report said Toliver and Mrs. Lewis were leaving the club together when Lewis got a rifle and fired three shots at them. The police said one shot hit the car Mrs. Lewis was in, one shot went astray and the third shot hit Toliver in the head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Richard Schmidt.

Toliver was a star player on the Columbus High School. basketball teams that ranked among the state's powers in the early 1980s. He saw a lot of action as a sophomore on the 1981 team that lost to eventual state champion Rice, and was a star player on the 1982 regional finalist team and the l983 team when went to the State Tournament. He graduated in 1983.

He also was a talented art student during his days at CHS.

He is survived by his parents, Edward and Myrtle Toliver of Columbus, four sisters, Marilyn McIntyre of' Dallas, Kenny Read of Houston, Barbara Toliver of Spanish Camp and Virginia Toliver of Elm Grove; four brothers, Marshall Toliver of Dallas and Herbert Perkins, Willis Perkins and Laray Perkins, all of Houston and one grandmother, Eva Mae Glover of Columbus. Toliver, Willie James

Willie James Toliver

On April 16, 1930, a precious boy was born to Willie Carter Toliver and Frank Toliver Sr. They named him Willie James. He was baptized at an early age. Willie James was raised in Garwood. He also attended grade school there.

Willie James later moved to Galveston and worked for Exxon. He was employed by Hartley Construction until he retired in 1993.

On Saturday March 1, God gently closed Willie James' eyes and whispered to him, "Peace Be Thine."

He is preceded in death by his parents; three sister, Geraldine Johnson, Mayetta Moses, and Lucy Kempt; and five brothers, Frank Toliver Jr., Robert Van Toliver, Lloyd Toliver, Pervis Toliver, and Leon Toliver.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Gussie Hurd Toliver; one daughter, Shirley Toliver Coleman of Houston; three sons, Willie Rogers (Patricia) of Galveston, Willie James Toliver Jr. of Galveston, Terry Toliver of LaMarque; six grandchildren, Willie Demby Jr., Timothy Gaines, Marteis Rogers, Michaela Rogers Wallace, Crystal Toliver, and Christina Toliver; six great grandchildren; one sister, Mablean Bluntson (Arvis) of Garwood; two brothers Artie Toliver (Betty) of Pampa, and Edward Toliver (Myrtle) of Columbus; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8 at noon at Greater Union Baptist Church with Rev. R. L. Robertson officiating. Interment followed at Willing Workers in Columbus. Services entrusted to Ben Davis Funeral Home.

KILLING AT COLUMBUS

Columbus Aug 18 -- A double tragedyoccurred at Towell & Shaw's gin yard in this city at 10o'clock last night in which E. C. Pinchback and V. A.Tolison lost their lives. Tolison, after a few words, cutPinchback's throat, from which he died one and a half hourslater.

Ned Burford, a cousin of Pinchback, waspresent and immediately shot Tolison with a pistol. Tolisonran away in the dark and his dead body was found about 1o'clock this morning.

Justice Gregory is holding the inquestthis morning and Burford waived examination and gave bond inthe sum of $1000. He is a son of ex-sheriff W. T. Burford.The unfortunate affair is universally deplored. -- HoustonChronicle.

He was born Jan. 31, 1925, in Codine, to the late August Karl and Bettie Palvick Toman. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. He was a veteran or World War II and a recipient of the Meritorious Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with the Bronze Arrowhead (Amphibious Assault Landing) and five bronze stars for Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaigns.

Survivors: wife, Betty Smart Toman; daughter, Lorene Toman of Brentwood; stepdaughters, Wanda Barrier of Yorktown, Lisa Toman of East Bernard, Dana Rodgers of Corpus Christi, Tiffany Fogle, and Lasca Asp of North Dakota; sons, Lawrence Toman of San Antonio, Robert Toman of Seaford, N.Y., James Allen Toman of Calabasas, Calif., and David Toman of East Bernard; sisters, Elizabeth Leblanc of Hearne, Lily Demn of Hallettsville, Alma Jane Jankowski of Richmond, Augusta Lee Comer, Margaret Provazono of Houston, Evelyn Becker of Houston, and Bettie Ann Lyons of Katy; brother, George Toman of Pasadena; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: one stepson; sister, Dorothy Toman; and brother, Eugene Toman.

Visitation will be noon today at Kubena Funeral Home chapel.

A rosary will be 7 p.m. tonight at the chapel.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville, the Rev. Bryan Heyer officiating.

Burial will be at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y.

Mrs. Dorothy Riehs Toombs of Pasadena and formerly of Columbus died Saturday, August 3.

Funeral services were held in Pasadena Tuesday morning, August 6, with Reverend Marlin Fenn of the Trinidad United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services were held at the Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. Toombs was born in Columbus, October 27, 1921 to Charles and Ophelia Saxon Riehs. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Survivors are: two sons, Charles Michael and Mark of Pasadena; one daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Mark Fenn and two grandchildren, Ronda and David, of Pearland; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Garland and Mary, of Wood River, Illinois; Charles and Doris, of High Point, N.C.; William and Joyce, of Victoria; and Clifford and Kay, of Davis, California. Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Beatrice Torres, 57, of Eagle Lake passed away Wednesday, March 7 in Katy.

She was born July 29, 1949 in Eagle Lake, the daughter of Florentino and Macaria Garza Sosa.

Preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and three brothers; survivors include her husband, John Torres; daughters, Jo Ann Castillo and husband, Jesus, and Angel Lynn Torres; sons, John Rene Torres and fiancé, Bianca Cantu, and Ryan Allen Torres all of Eagle Lake; sisters, Mary Munoz of Eagle Lake, Margaret Casares of Houston; brothers, Joe Sosa of Houston, Leandro Sosa of Rosenberg, and Damasio Sosa of Houston; brother-in-law, Wayne Moore of Houston; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at 7 p.m., Friday, March 9, at the Eagle Lake Funeral Home with Rev. Joe and Mercy Fling officiating.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Carmela Elizondo presiding.

The family later held a private burial [at Lakeside Cemetery]. Arrangements were under the direction of Eagle Lake Funeral Home.

March 23, 1920-July 11, 2001

Bill Torres, 81, of Eagle Lake, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the Veteran's Hospital in Houston following a lengthy illness.

He was born March 23, 1920 in Eagle Lake to Dionicio and Frances Landeros Torres.

Attending Eagle Lake schools, he served his country honorably with the U. S. Army during World War II, serving in the Aleutians Islands campaign, and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with one Bronze Star and Good conduct Medal.

He married Ramona Ybarra in Eagle Lake on January 20, 1946 and worked in area sand and gravel quarries for 21 years.

After working with natural furniture for 11 years, he retired from the City of Eagle Lake following 11 years of faithful service.

A member of the Roman Catholic Parish of the Nativity, he was also a member of the Knights of columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8783.

Preceded in death by his parents; sisters, sophia Padia and Esperanza Dominguez; and brother, Delfino Torres; survivors include his wife, Ramona; daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Bobby Zapalac, all of Eagle Lake; sons and daughter-in-law, Bill D. and Virginia Torres, John R. and Guadalupe Torres and Henry Torres of Houston, James and Gloria Torres of Rosenberg and Floyd Torres of North Carolina; sisters, Jovita Alvarado and Virginia Castillo of Houston, Tomasa Cruz of Freeport and Anita Tapia of Arizona; a brother, Tony Torres of Houston; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and loved ones.

A vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 13, from the Chapel of Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Eddie Winkler presiding; Maria de la Paz Nunez served as Cantor, and special tributes were given by his sons, grandchildren and VFW Post commander Len Matula.

A Rosary followed, led by Marcy Salinas.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, from the Roman Catholic Parish of the Nativity's Our Lady of Perpetual Help Sanctuary with Rev. Eddie Winkler officiating.

Other ministers included Guadalupe Gasca, Cross Bearer and SErver; PHillip Soto Jr., Lector; Cynthia Sunderman, Cantor; Patty Stephens, Organist; Theresa and Bobby Zapalac, Gift Bearers; Ruby and Guadalupe Gasca, Leo Luna, Hortense Ramirez and Vira Soto, Ministers of Communion; and Fulton Dromgoole and Herbert Ramirez, Paten Holders.

Interment and military honors followed in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake under the auspices of VFW Post 8783 of Eagle Lake.

Dulany Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Bill D. Torres, Christopher Torres, John R. Torres Jr., James A. Torres Jr., Ryan K. Banegas and Brian K. Cardenas.

The family requests memorials be made to the Parish of the Nativity Building Fund.

Carmen Pulido Torres, 83, of Houston,died Friday, July 8, 1994, in a Houston nursinghome.

Born in Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico,she was the daughter of Roque and Eulalia (Villarreal)Pulido. On May 1, 1937, she married Casimiro C. Torres. Mrs.Torres was a homemaker and a Catholic who had been a Houstonresident since 1959.

Funeral services were held Monday, July11, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with FatherTim Kosler officiating. Interment followed inSt.Anthony Catholic Cemetery.Services were under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home,Columbus.

Casimiro Tortes, 69, of Eagle Lake, passed away October 3 at the Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held October 5 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Rev. Lionel DeSilva, C.P.S. officiating. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery. Services were directed by Dulany Funeral Home.

Casimiro Torres was born March 4, 1915. He had been an Eagle Lake resident most of his life. He retired in 1980 after 40 years of service with the Santa Fe Railroad.

He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of Eagle Lake.

Hermerejilda Maria Torres of Columbus passed away January 17. 1993 in the Columbus Community Hospital at the age of 96 years.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Torres were held Wednesday. January 20 at 3:00 p.m. from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Father Richard Jones officiating and interment in the church cemetery.

Born in San Marcos April 13, 1906. Mrs. Torres was the daughter of Secperno and Avarita Cardenas Rodriguez. She married Domingo Torres December 30, 1926 and was a housewife. She lived most of her life in the Eagle Lake and Sheridan area, living in Columbus the past 2-1/ 2 years.

Survivors include her husband, Domingo Torres of Columbus; daughter, Elisa T. Munoz of Sheridan; sons. Lucas Torres of Albuquerque. New Mexico, Jesse Torres of Columbus and Domingo Torres of Houston; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers were Luke Torres Jr., Danny Torres, Manuel Munoz, Brandon Munoz, Daniel Torres, Sandy Torres, Larry Munoz, Eric Cuellar, Jesse Torres Jr., Teddy Munoz, Nick Alan Munoz and Travis Stasney.

Mary Vasquez Torres, 88, of El Campo, formerly of Columbus, passed away Aug. 22 at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston.

She was born in Waco, May 25, 1917 to Eufemio and Solada (Ramirez) Vasquez and married Frank Torres Sr., May 10, 1937.

She was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church in El Campo.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sons, Frank C. Torres Jr.; and granddaughters, Paula and Rhonda Kay Torres.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Hilda and Tommy Bidales of Mentz, Eva and Johnny Rodriguez of Conroe and Marie Alice and Rod Medina of El Campo; sons and daughters-in-law, Gus and Florine Torres of Weimar, Rudy and Sandy Torres of Columbus and Richard Torres of El Campo; half sisters, Juanita Garcia of Columbus, Molly Cavello of Sugar Land, Consuelo Ramirez of Geronimo and Susana Gonzalez of San Antonio; half-brothers, Pete Ramirez of Columbus and Manuel Ramirez of San Marcos; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Torivio [Toribio] Torres, a respected Mexican citizen, who had lived on the H. A. Dromgoole farm for 25 years, passed away about noon Sunday. The body was being held awaiting the arrival of his sons who are in the Army.

One son, Pvt. Peter Torres of Keesler Field, Miss., arrived Tuesday night. Pfc. Ernest Torres of camp San Louis Obispo Calif., and Pvt. Bill Torres of Alaska were in route. Another younger son, Dan Torres, with the wido of Torivio Torres are also among the survivors. [Interred at Lakeside Cemetery]

Guadalupe G. Torrez (better know as Jr.), 38, passed away April 14 in Houston.

He was born March 23, 1971 in Yoakum.

Jr. was a diesel mechanic and of Catholic faith.

Jr. was preceded in death by two grandfathers; and one grandmother.

He leaves to cherish his memories grandmother, Elena Torrez of Yorktown; parents, Guadalupe Torrez, Sr. and Rachael of Eagle Lake; son, Guadalupe Jesus Torres; sisters, Jo Ann Perry, Bobbie Joe Contreras and Benny all of Eagle Lake and Jennifer Owens and Joey of Columbus; brothers, Steve Torrez, Sr. and Elaine and Marcus Torrez all of Eagle Lake.

Funeral services were held at the Parish of the Nativity Church on April 17 at 1 p.m. with Father Robert Guerra officiating. Burial followed at Nativity Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Eagle Lake Funeral Home.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. TOWELL HELD YESTERDAY
Loved Citizen of Eagle Lake Passed Away In Houston Wednesday Morning, Following Illness of Ten Weeks.

Funeral services for Mrs. R. H. Towell 44 years of age, who died at 9 a. m. Wednesday at the home of her sister-in-law. Mrs. H. W. Carothers, in Houston, were held front the McCreary Funeral Home, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A solemn, sweet prayer service was, conducted by Rev. W. B. Wheeler, local Methodist minister, during which the only funeral music was a solo by Mr. C. D. Grubbs of Houston.

Mrs. Towell passed away after an illness of ten week, five of which were in the Memorial Hospital at Houston following an operation and the latter five weeks at the Carothers home.

Before her marriage she was Miss Emma Humphreys, and was born in San Marcus. She was married twenty-three years ago in Columbus to Mr. Towel!, the family moving to Eagle Lake from that city fifteen years ago.

Mrs. Towell was one of Eagle Lake's most loved women, for hers was a gentle, sweet, amiable disposition, and every acquaintance was a warm friend. So gentle, so sweet, so refined, she endeared herself to our people and to the people wherever she went, for her noble qualities of heart and mind made her a genuine favorite among all with whom she associated.

She was prominent in educational and religious work, a member of the Parent-Teachers Association during its activity here. She was a member of the Methodist church, the Garden Club and was active in Eastern Star work and one of that order’s most cherished members.

She is survived by her husband, R. H. Towell; two sons, R. H. Towell, Jr. and Billy Humphreys Towell, all of this city; a sister, Mrs. grady Shaver of Weimar, and two brothers, W. F. Humphreys of Del rio and J. L. Humphreys of Terlinhua, and a host of friends through out the city, community and county.

Following 'the funeral service here, many friends followed the casket to Columbus where interment was made in Odd Fellow Rest, with the services at the grave conducted by the order of the Eastern Star.

The pallbearers were H. C. Fitzgerald, T. P. Haley, F. Roos, Griff Thomas Jr., Grady Shaver of Weimar and Ben Anders.

To our friend, in the death of his life companion, one of the sweetest, most gentle. and finest characters we have ever known: and to the two fines boys who have lost their life's richest treasure--their mother--the Headlight editor joins with a legion of friends in extending sincerest sympathy in this hour of deep sorrow.

Dr. Isaac Towell, an old and respected resident of this city, died at his residence about 8 o’clock Saturday morning, aged 78. He has been for many years afflicted with partial paralysis, and confined to his room, and he bore his sufferings with remarkable fortitude and patience. The doctor was a man of naturally strong mind, thought for himself, and though never obtrusive, bold and manly in the expression of his views. His remains were interred last Sunday morning in the Fitzgerald cemetery, Shaw’s Bend. He leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

Mr. Ike Towell End Own Life

Mr. Ike Towell passed out of thislife some time turing last night, presumably about midnight. Two empty bottles that had contained poison were found at his bed.

Mr. Towell had been in poor health for a year of so, having suffered astroke of paralysis and in late months his eyes had become very poor. Funeral arrangements had not been made as we go to press.

Mr. Ike Towell was a man of strong convictions, an announced atheist, strictly honest in his every dealing, an open enemy to strong drink and tobacco, fearless a nd courageous. He was a unique character in some ways. About a year ago he had a tombstone placed at his grave, and a few days ago he bought his coffin and left full instructions as to his funeral.

Mr. Towell had many friends in this and nearby counties.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Bettie Walker, of this city to whom the sympathy of the entire community goes out.

Mr. Ike Towell Funeral Held

Funeral services for Mr. Ike Towell were held here Friday morning at Odd Fellows Rest. Criminal District Judge Whit Boyd of Houston, reading the service which consisted of a last message written by Mr. Towell and directed to be read by some one “not afraid that lightning would strike during the service.”

Over 100 persons wee present to hear the following message:

“Especially do I want to impress the fact upon the people that one child was born, passed through the years of youth, grew to manhood, lived a tolerably respectable life, reached old age, died and could be buried without the assistance of the clergy.”

“It is my will and I so direct that my funeral be the cheapest possible. I do not hold with carrying a person from county to county for the sole purpose of burial.

“My religion consists of doing right and loving justice. I affirm that all men should tell the truth and pay their debts. I do not believe in any God, devil, ghost or savior and I have opposed tobacco, whiskey, gambling, ly8ing and stealing practically all my life. If any one of the clergy ever calls my name after death I insist that he speak the truth about me, a thing I have never known a preacher to do about a dead disbeliever. The clergy have never been able to bribe me with the promise of a beautiful home in a fictitious heaven nor bluff my by their everlasting punishment in a hell of fire and brimstone.”

Mr. Towell is survived by two half sisters, Mrs. Bettie Walker of this city and Mr. W. T. Ory of San Antonio, and by the following nieces and nephews: Dr. R. H. Harrison, Mrs. T. J. Windham, Judge Whit Boyd, William Boyd, Mrs. H. W. Carothers, Mrs. Bennie Peterson and Miss Ina Mae Towell of Houston. Miss Lydia Boyd of Washington, D. C., Braxton Boyd of Tennessee, Sam Towell and Ike Towell of Beaumont, Dr. Whit Harrison of Kansas City, R. H. Towell of Eagle Lake, Carey Towell of San Antonio, Mrs. Margaret Littlefield of Dallas, Mrs. Walter Hinson of Richmond, and Mrs. Stanley DeWaal of San Antonio.

The bereaved ones have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.

97-year-old Mrs. Towel is Buried HereTuesday

Funeral services were held at the Baptistchurch here Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Laura Rebecca Towell,97, who died Sunday at the home of her daughters', Mrs. H.W. Carothers and Miss Ina Mae Towell, in Houston.

Mrs. Towell, who was born in Shaw's BendDec. 7, 1856, was a daughter of Col. Josiah Shaw, plantationowner, for who that community was named. In 1879, she wasmarried to James Whitworth towel, farmer an gin operator. Hedied in 1919.

After breaking her hip 20 years ago, Mrs.Towell moved from Columbus to Houston to live with herdaughters.

During her residence here she was adiligent worker with the Baptist Church, and after her moveto Houston she continued her church work.

Dr. Norman Roberts officiated andColumbus Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Burialwas in OddFellows Rest cemetery.

During the funeral services, apiano-organ duet "Beautiful City" was played, with Mrs. H.A. Ward at the organ and Mrs. Stanley deWaal at the piano.The piano in the church was a recent gift from Mrs. Towell'sfamily in her honor.

Besides Mrs. Carothers and Miss Towell,she is survived by a son, Carey Towell of San Antonio, andanother son, Roy H. Towell of Eagle Lake, also 3grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Joe Shaw ofColumbus is her nephew and Mrs. Cora Rudicil of Columbus isher niece.

EAGLE LAKE ITEMS

Death has again visited our little city and left sorrow and gloom in his wake. This time two of our most prominent citizens—John A. Dobbins and Henry S. Tracy—were taken suddenly from the world and transplanted on the eternal shore. Mr. Dobbins was taken sick Friday night, and died Sunday evening, and was buried in the Masonic cemetery Monday evening with Masonic honors. Mr. Tracy had been sick about a week, and died also on Sunday evening, a short time after Mr. Dobbins, and was buried on the lake Tuesday morning by the A. O. U. W. and K. and L. of Honor. Eagle Lake has indeed suffered great loss. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended the bereaved relatives and friends.

No longer than in last week’s Citizen we noticed in the Eagle Lake Items that a comrade of the late war, a member of Company C. has passed over the river and now rests under the shade. Henry S. Tracy made a true and faithful soldier and in arms was always ready; and so he may have died. One by one they pass away to join those beyond and as we pause in memory true words seem to interrogate us, “say, are you ready?”

COL. THOMAS TRAINER died at his ranch on the Pin-oak creek,in this county, of flux, on Thursday last, 14th inst. Deceased was born in Greene county, Kentucky, on he[sic] 14th of February, 1812. and has been for many years a resident of Columbus, and was for a time engaged in the mercantile business. He was a gentlemen[sic] of unobtrusive deportment, kindly manner, probity[sic], and for years a consistent member of the Baptist church. His remains were consigned to dust at Odd Fellows’s Rest at 10 o’clock last Friday morning, to await the resurrection morn.

Trammell, Martin

A negro man named Martin Trammell was found dead in his bed, at his home about three miles south of Weimar, last Friday night, his death having been caused from a gunshot wound in the neck. In the absence of Justice of the Peace Hancock, Judge H. J. Strunk of Oakland presided at the inquest, and the verdict returned was that the deceased came to his death from the result of a gunshot wound, self inflicted. It is believed the negro deliberately committed suicide by placing the gun barrel against his neck and pulling the trigger with his toe. This negro was suspected of knowing something about the dead body of the baby found last week upon his premises, and it is believed that fear of some punishment being inflicted upon him caused him to commit suicide. Trammell, Sylva Ray

FINAL RITES HELD FOR SYLVA RAY TRAMMELL

Final rites were held Wednesday, January 25th at 9:30 am., for  Sylva Ray Trammell of Beaumont, Texas.  Interment was in the Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Paul A. Grout of the Garwood Methodist Church officiating.  Mr. Trammell died Monday, Jan. 23rd at a Beaumont Hospital after resent surgery.  He was born at Mountain Home, Ark., on January 12th, 1906 and at the time of his death resided Silsbee, Texas and was employed by Clegg and Hunt Drilling Contractors.  He had many friends in the vicinity and made his home at times in Garwood with his half-sister, Mrs. W.N. Dixon.  He also resided in Eagle Lake for a time.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Aline Trammell of Silsbee; two sons, Buddy Ray Trammell of New Iberia, La., and Bobbie Trammell of Waco; and a step daughter, Mrs. M.W. Dubon, Jr. of Winnie, Texas.  Also surviving are two brothers, Herman Trammell of Yuba City, Calif., three half brothers, Ray Trammell of Area, Mo., Marvin Trammell of Mountain Home, Ark., and Edgar Lornan of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; and three grandchildren and three step grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A number of Garwood friends were in Eagle Lake for the funeral services.

June 7, 1900 — February 21, 1993

Claude C. Trapp Sr., 92, of Columbus and formerly of Rock Island, died February 21, 1993, at River Oaks Convalescent Center in Columbus.  He was born June 7, 1900, in Paris, Texas, to John and Josephine McGuire Trapp. On October 31, 1931, he married Marie Eaton. He was a retired heavy construction worker.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eunice Venghaus; his parents; four brothers; two sisters; and three grandchildren.  Survivors include his wife, Marie Trapp of Columbus; a daughter, Joy Holbrook of Houston; two sons, J.C. Trapp of Columbus and Claude C. Trapp Jr. of Houston; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held February23 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Schlortt officiating. Burial following at Myrtle Cemetery in Rock Island.  Pallbearers were John Trapp, Keith Day, David Venghaus and Dave Taylor.  Sympathy is extended to the family in their loss.

Trapp

J. C. Trapp, 70, of Columbus, passed away Jan. 25 at St. Luke Hospital in Houston.

He was born in Dallas, Dec. 3, 1935 to Claude C. and Marie (Eaton) Trapp and married Erlene Ressler, Sept. 1, 1956. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and retired as a pile driver for heavy construction companies.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Eunice Venghaus.

He is survived by his wife; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Mike Gordy of Columbus and Tammi and Rocky Menke of Columbus; son, John and Christi Trapp of Columbus; sister, Joy Jay Hollbrook of Beaumont; brother. C.C. “Bo” Trapp Jr. of Huffmann; grandchildren, Ami (Menke) and husband Chris Doran, Alli Menke, Brad and Julie Gordy and Lauren and Ashley Trapp; and great-grandson, Colin Doran.

Funeral services were conducted Jan. 28 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus with Deacon Benny Holesovsky officiating. Interment followed in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus.

Marie E. Trapp, 81, of Columbus diedFriday, March 4, 1994, in Columbus.

Born Oct. 5, 1912, in Rock Island, she was the daughter of George and Summer [Sumner] (Keinchlor [Kincheloe]) Eaton. On Oct. 31, 1931, she married Claude C. Trapp. She lived most of her life in rock Island residing for the last six years in Columbus.

Funeral services were held Monday, March7, at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus with Rev. RobertSchlortt officiating. Interment followed in MyrtleCemetery in RockIsland.

Pallbearers were John Trapp, DavidVenghaus, Keith Day and Gary Cooper.

MR. CHAS. TRAYLOR

Mr. Charles Traylor passed out of this life at his home in the city early yesterday morning, after an illness of several months. About two weeks ago he fell and broke his hip, which caused him much suffering and served to hasten the end.

Funeral services were held at the residence at four yesterday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in Odd Fellows Rest. Rev. M. L. Darby conducted the service.

Mr. Traylor was born in Jackson County, Texas, June 10, 1847. He came to this city over fifty years ago and was in business here with his brother in the grocery business for a number of years, and later was in the lumber business. He was married to Miss Lou Perry in July 1875.

He served the Confederacy in the Civil War.

He is survived by three brothers, a wife and three daughters, Mrs. J. L. Keith and Mrs. Roberta Bunch of Beaumont and Mrs. Maud Schultz of this city.

The Citizen extends sympathy.

JIM TRAYLOR, AGED COLORED MAN, DIES

Jim Traylor, colored resident of Weimar said to be 77 years of age, died here very suddenly of a heart attack last Friday afternoon. Bystanders were astounded, as the negro had no more than sat down at the Ford Motor Co. when he had this attack which proved to be fatal. A few moments before he had bought a nice-sized cut of meat from the Kasper market, and while there had casually remarked he hoped he would be able to eat some of it for super that night.

Jim had worked for Mr. B. L. Townsend for many years past. His wife Lucy, survives him. They had no children. [Interment in Paradise Gardens]

Mrs. Traylor was born in Columbus September 19, 1857, the daughter of Geo. L. Perry.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Maud Schultz of Columbus and Mrs. Fay Bunch of Beaumont, one sister, Mrs. J. W. Whittington of Yoakum, and one brother, J. L. Perry of Columbus.

He worked for Island Operating, Inc. ofLaFayette, La., an oil production company and was a memberof the First Baptist Church in Columbus.

He was preceded in death by hisfather.

Chas. Trefny Funeral Held Here April 12

Funeral services for Charlie Trefny, 85, of Weimar, prominent farmer and rancher of the river area at Osage were held Thursday, April 12, from Weimar United Church Of Christ, with burial in Masonic Cemetery, Rev. Norman 'Skip' Sirnic officiated.

Trefny died of heart failure at 2 a. m. Wednesday, April 11, at his home, after a long period of failing health.

Born Nov. 26, 1904, in the Wildwood community, he was a son or Ignac and Louise (Klos) Trefny. He married Emma Brandt at Weimar on Nov. 7, 1926.

He was named Colorado Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1952. A longtime supporter of the Weimar FFA Chapter, he, was honored by the that association in 1978 with the Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree , a recognition that has been given only twice in Weimar.

He was a member of Weimar United Church Of Christ and the Churchmen's Brotherhood there, Weimar Masonic Lodge No. 423, and Houston Scottish Rite, Arabia Temple Shrine.

His wife survives him, along with one son, Charles T. Trefny of Weimar; three grandchildren, Russell, Michael and Kim; twin granddaughters, Lauren and Morgan Trefny; four sisters, Gertie Brandt and Adeline Brandt of Holman, Tillie Brandt of Weimar and Emmie Klesel of Schulenburg; and one brother, George Trefny of Waco. One brother, Louis, preceded him in death

Funeral services for Emma Brandt Trefny, 87, of Weimar were held Sunday, March 3, at United Church of Christ in Weimar, with the Rev. Skip Sirnic officiating.

Burial was in the Weimar Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. Trefny died Friday, March 1, at Parkview Manor.

She was born March 2, 1908 to Henry Theodore and Selma (Benedict) Brandt in the Osage Community, Weimar.

She attended school through the eighth grade at Osage Schools.

She was married to Charlie Trefny on Nov. 7, 1926 at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Weimar.

Mrs. Trefny lived her whole life in the Osage Community.

She was a housewife and a member of many organizations, including the Colorado Home Demonstration Club, Weimar Garden Club and Evening Circle of United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Trefny was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in April 1990, and a brother, Ewald Brandt

She is survived by her son, Charles Theodore Trefny, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Final Rites For Louis Trefny, 68, Held Tuesday

Funeral services for Louis A. Trefny, 68, were held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, In the Weimar United Church of Christ, with burial in Masonic Cemetery. Rev. Robert N. Crawford officiated.

Mr. Trefny died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 at Youens Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for several weeks. He had been in ill health for several years.

Born Aug. 25, 1902, in Fayette County, he was a son of Ignac and Louise Klos Trefny. He married Laura Wienken on Nov. 1, 1926, and they settled in the Wildwood community, where they farmed until 1948, when they moved to Weimar. Here he was employed as a parts man at Brandt Motor Co. He also was a star route mail carrier and a substitute night watchman for several years.

Mr. Trefny was a member of the United Church of Christ, the Churchmen's Fellowship, the Volunteer Fire Department, and an officer in RVOS, Sedan Lodge No. 64. At Wildwood he had served as a school trustee.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Trefny of Weimar; three sons, Milton, Robert, and Floyd, all of Houston; three daughters, Mrs. Gilbert (Evelyn) Guenther of Weimar, Mrs. J. C. (Violet) Hrachovy of Houston and Mrs. Eugene (Lillian) Farek of Pasadena; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. two brothers, Charlie Trefny of Weimar and George Trefny of Waco; and four sisters, Mrs. George (Gertie) Brandt Jr. and Mrs. Arthur (Adeline) Brandt Sr., both of La Grange, Mrs. Oscar (Tillie) Brandt of Weimar, and Mrs. Hubert (Emmie) Klesel of Schulenburg.

Pallbearers were Edwin Peters, Anton Schindler, Fred Vornsand, Leanard Bartos, Charles Kalbus and Rudy Jasek. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fire Department.

She was too good for this world, so God took her home, to have one more angel. God giveth; God taketh.

GLEN FLORA CHILD IS BURIED HERE TUESDAY

Sympathy of all who know them is extended Mr. and Mrs. Mrs. Treybig of Glen Flora, whose baby boy, Dean Karlton Treybig, who, had he lived, would have been two years old in September, died at the Rosenberg hospital Monday morning following a two weeks' illness.

The little casket was brought, to Eagle Lake, funeral services being held Tuesday from the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Kohleffel, with Rev. Bruner S. Lee, Baptist pastor, conducting the services. Interment was made in the Lakeside Cemetery. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Besides the grief-stricken parents, and sorrowing grandparents, the sweet little baby boy is survived by two sisters, Margaret and Catherine, two brothers, James and Harry Lee and numerous other relatives.

To the lives of men and women many sorrows come but there is no sorrow that so overwhelms or so crushes the heart as that of the death of a dimpled darling, whose voice in the home was music that soothed and gladdened the heart and whose smile was the beam that banished clouds and tinted the future with prophetic ray. May He who pities the sorrowing soon send a healing sympathy to heal the bleeding hearts.

Treybig

Gladys Kohleffel Treybig, 89, of Bay City, died Tuesday, May 13,1997, at Matagorda House in Bay City.

Born March 10, 1908 in Eagle Lake, she was the daughter of William G. and Margaret (Johnson) Kohleffel. A 1928 graduate of Eagle Lake High School, she had lived in Bay City since 1942, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Services were held May 15 at the chapel of Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment followed in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Serving as pallbearers were Mike Treybig, Gary Dail Treybig, Randy McNeil, Kyle Kerlick, Stuart Hardin, Steven Hardin, Robert Hardin and Bobbie Wilpitz.

Mrs. Treybig is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and W.H. Martin of Bay City and Kathryn and Arlin Hardin of Waterwood; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Lorraine Treybig of Port Lavaca and Harry and Gloria Treybig of Fairchild; sister Myrtle Arnett of Pasadena, Texas; 15 grand-children, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Milton H. Treybig, in 1980; son Dean Carlton Treybig, sister "Willie K." (Mrs: Orxille J) Mill; and brothers Raymond and Alvin W. Kohleffel.

Sosthenne A. Trichel, Jr., 79, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Oct. 5, in the V.A. Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 7 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Weimar with Father John C. Bily officiating.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Trichel was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Harrisonburg, La. He was a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

He was a “Flying Tiger” under the command of General Claire Chenault’s 14th Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Trichel is survived by two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Mirch Trichel of Weimar; one son, Stephen Trichel; his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice or to the charity of one’s choice.

Stephen Trchel Funeral Held Here June 5

Funeral services for Stephen Andrew Trichel, 30, of Amarillo were held Wednesday June 5, at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Father John Bily officiated.

Trichel, a night dispatcher for a meat packing company died June 2 at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Amarillo. Born July 13, 1960, he was the son of S. A. Jr. and Mary Ann (Mirch) Trichel. He graduated from Tascosa High School in 1977. He was a member of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Amarillo.

His parents, who live in Amarillo, are his only immediate survivors.

Jason was killed in a motor vehicleaccident on Monday, Feb. 9, near Paris, Tex.

He was a member of the Navarro Collegebasketball team and was one of two students killed when avan in which they were riding made a U-turn and was struckbroadside by a tractor-trailer.

Jason was born Oct. 28, 1985, the son ofAshton and Jill Trier. He graduated from Harker Heights HighSchool in Killeen last year.

He leaves to mourn his loving family andfriends.

His mother is an assistant superintendentwith the Giddings School District. His father is alieutenant colonel, stationed at Fort Hood.

Trimble, Prichard

Negro Pedestrian 6th Traffic Victim in County for 1951.

Prichard Trimble, 75 year old Weimar negro, became the 6th traffic fatality in the county this year when he was hit by a car officers said was being driven by Mrs. W. W. Gunn Sr. of Columbus and La Grange as he was on Highway 90 near the Fayette county line Monday night.

rimble was killed instantly, according to Justice of the Peace A. J. Ratliff, who held an inquest shortly after the accident.

Officers ruled the accident unavoidable by Mrs. Gunn and filed no charges.

Patrolman Gene Crowder and Weimar City Marshall Fred Vornsand said the negro apparently made a sudden decision to cross the highway just as Mrs. Gunn's car was approaching from the east.

Mrs. Gunn stopped immediately, the officers said, but was unable to flag a car for help for several minutes.

Trimble, an employe for 35 years of the Boettcher Produce company in Weimar, lived alone but is survived by 2 daughters. His body was brought to Columbus by a Davis Funeral home ambulance.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed yesterday. [Place of interment unknown]

MRS. HENRY TROJAN DEAD

We learned Wednesday morning that Mrs. Henry Trojan, wife of a highly respected farmer of the Borden community, who had been very ill, died Monday night, and our informant said the funeral took place at Miller Creek Cemetery Wednesday. Mrs. Trojan was 75 years of age. We have only bare particulars at this writing, but hope to have a fuller report of her death in next issue.

OAK GROVE ITEMS OF INTEREST

The death of Mrs. Henry Trojan of this section, which occurred at the family home Monday of last week, was a shock to all of her friends, as very few knew that she was seriously ill. Mrs. Trojan was well and favorably known down here, having lived in this section practically all her life. She was a good neighbor, wife and mother. The remains were laid to rest in the Miller Creek Cemetery Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Mrs. Trojan leaves to mourn her demise her husband, Mr. Henry Trojan, and one daughter, Mrs. Walter Lucko, three grandchildren, and one brother, Herman Voskamp of New Ulm. The family has the sympathy of the entire community.

NEWS OF BORDEN SECTION.

Mrs. Amelia Malvine Trojan (nee Voskamp) ws born at New Ulm, Austin county, Dec 10, 1860, and grew up to womanhood there. After the death of both her parents she came to live here with a brother and sister, about 28[sic] years ago. Later, March 1, 1900, she was united in marriage to Henry Trojan and to this union two daughters were born. One, the youngest, passed away soon at the age of only seven weeks, and the mother has now gone to meet her other dear ones who are waiting at the golden gate. She died June 25, 1935, at 1:30, after being seriously ill for five days. She had been in ill health for a number of years, but did her best to keep her housework going, without assistance. She would say, “ I can do that”, but would get very tired. Her illness and death is indeed sad to us all. Everything possible was done, but all in vain. It was God’s will to claim her, and relieve her of her suffering. Her vacant place is one hard to be filled, and she will be missed greatly , but we must bear it, as she can’t be with us any more. She was laid to rest at Miller’s Creek Cemetery the following day at 4 p.m., Rev. Flachmeier delivering the funeral service both at the home and at the grave. Those left to mourn her passing are her husband, Henry Trojan, one daughter, Mrs. Walter Lucko, and three grandchildren; also one brother, Mr. H. L. Voskamp of New Ulm. May she rest in peace, till we meet again.

Arnold Trojan died at his home in this town Wednesday night, of tuberculosis after an illness several months. He was 36 years old, and died on his birthday. The funeral was conducted by Rev., Father T. Smyth Vaudry, Catholic Priest, and interment made at City Cemetery. He leaves a wife and three little children, all girls. Our deepest sympathies are extended the bereaved family.

Trojan

Gisela Trojan, 92, of Columbus, died Sunday, June 22, 1997 in Houston.

Born Oct. 27, 1904 in Columbus, she was the daughter of Arnold and Louisa (Doree) Trojan. Retired after a 50-year teaching career, Ms. Trojan had taught at Bernardo, Zimmerscheidt, Shaws Bend and Coumbus Elementary schools, as well as Herman Seminary. The lifelong Columbus resident was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony Altar Society and Court Mary Queen of Snows 1588, Mary Queen of Snows.

She was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Columbus Hospital Auxiliary, and the council of Catholic Women.

Services were held June 25 at St. Anthony, with Father Tim KosIer officiating. Interment followed in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus. Services were under the direction of kenneke Funeral Home, Columbus.

Serving as pallbearers were Hal Edwards, Edward Ehrichs, Alan Mut, Ellis Glueck, Joe Trojan and Mike Handley. Honorary pallbearers were lElton Litzmann, Fred Hernandez and Stuart Mut.

Ms. Trojan is survived by nieces Mary Margaret Kampe Mut and husband Stuart of Dallas and Mary Margaret Litzmann Edwards and husband Victor of The Woodlands; great-nieces and nephews, Margaret McConn, Beth Ehrichs, Stuart Mut, Stephen Mut, David Mut, Alan Mut and Hal Edwards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Cecilia Kampe and Margaret Litzmann.

Trojan, Henry

SERVICES HELD FOR HENRY TROJAN, BORDEN FARMER, 79

Funeral services for Henry Trojan, 79, a seventy-year resident of this area whose death occurred at the family home Wednesday, were held Thursday , with the Rev. W. A. Flachmeier conducting the services.

A native of Germany where he was born May 12, 1862, he came to this section, along with his parents, at the age of nine. He was a prominent farmer and held extensive farm lands in the Borden section near here.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. W. W. Lucko of Borden; a sister, Mrs. Lena Hoegemeyer of Weimar; and five grandchildren, Ernest, Leonard, Owen, Gladys and Pauline Lucko, all of this area.

Burial was in the Miller cemetery at Borden.

To sorrowing survivors the Mercury extends sincere sympathy.

HENRY TROJAN
(Special to The Mercury)

Mr. Henry Trojan was born in Schobin, Germany, on May 12, 1862, and died Tuesday, May 6, at the home of his daughter in the Borden-Oak Grove section six days prior to his 80th birthday. After being in ill health for many years, and for the last several months in serious condition, he grew weaker and weaker until death claimed him.

Mr. Trojan came to America in 1880, first settling at Brenham and later moved to the Weimar-New Bielau section. In 1900, he married Miss Malvine Voskamp, a native of New Ulm, who lived at the time in the Borden-Oak Grove area. His wife died in 1935.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, with Rev. W. A. Flachmeier conducting the services from the Untermeyer home at Columbus, with later services at the Miller Creek cemetery at Oak Grove.

Pallbearers were six nephews: Gus and Louise Dahse and Fritz Wendt of Weimar area; Marcos Voskamp of Shiner, Adrnie[sic] Voskamp of New Ulm and Louis of Columbus.

He leaves to mourn his passing, one daughter, Mrs. Walter Lucko; five grandchildren and one sister.

Trojan, Joseph

Columbus, Tex., Dec. 5.--Joseph Trojan died suddenly from rupture of a blood vessel on the brain. He was born in Moravia, Austria, in 1856, emigrated to Columbus in 1870, was married to Miss Leopoldine Richter in 1874. He is survived by his widow and two grown children, Joseph and Mrs. Amalia Richter, both of Columbus, and nine sisters, one of whom resides in Houston, Mrs. A. Prucha. The other sisters live in Austria. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He was buried in the City Cemetery, Father Smyth performing the funeral service.

Truchard,Ethel Bess (Rennspies)

Funeral services for Ethel Bess (Pudding)Truchard, 27, of Cat Spring were held Saturday morning atthe Henneke Funeral Home. Father Bernard Snochofficiated.

Interment was in St.Roch's Catholic Cemetery in Mentzunder the direction of Henneke Funeral Home.

Mrs. Truchard died of a heart attack Jan.27.

She was born July 21, 1945, in NewBraunfels, the daughter of Clarence and Mildred Fay(Potschernick) Rennspies.

She married Dennis Truchard on Sept. 3,1972. Mrs. Truchard had been a Cat Spring resident for fouryears and was a member of the Presbyterian church and theWoodmen of the World.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis ofMentz; her father, Clarence Rennspies of Houston; twograndparents, Mrs. Ethel Schumann of New Braunfels and Mrs.Ella Rennspies of Seguin; one son, Patrick Truchard ofMentz; one daughter, Crystal Gail Truchard of Mentz, asister, Margaret Rennspies of Houston; and one brother,Charles Rennspies of College Station.

Lillie Schneider Truchard, 85, of theMentz-Bernardo community, died Tuesday, April 5, 1994, inColumbus.

Born April 11, 1908, in New Brauncommunity near Weimar, she was the daughter of Ferdinand andAnnie (Berger) Schneider. On June 22, 1936, she married Joe"Pat" Truchard at St. Michael's Church in Weimar. Mrs.Truchard had resided for 58 years in the Mentz-Bernardo areaand was a member of St. Roch's Catholic Church in Mentz andSt. Roch's Altar Society.

Funeral services were held Saturday,April 9, at St. Roch's Catholic Church with Father BernardSnoch officiating. Interment followed in St.Roch's Catholic Cemetery. Funeralservices were under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home,Columbus.

Pallbearers were John-Marcel Truchard,Marvin Schneider, Thomas Schneider, David Linville, ArlandSchneider and Leon Berger.

Mrs. Truchard is survived by herdaughters, Sister Mildred Truchard of San Antonio and AnneLinville of Austin; sons, Dr. Anthony Truchard of Napa,California, Joe E. Wylie W. True Services Held July 11 In Weimar

Wylie W. True, 84, of Weimar, died July 8, 1997 at Southern Manor Nursing Center in Hallettsville.

Funeral services were held July 11 from the Hubbard Funeral Home in Weimar with Rev. Skip Sirnic officiating.

Burial followed in the Masonic Cemetery in Weimar. Memorial taps were performed by Dickie Muehr.

True was born March 25, 1913 to Eugene and Mattie Viola (Jones) True in Alex, Okla. He graduated from Ninnekah High School, Okla. as salutatorian.

On June 15, 1942 he married Dorothy McMillan in Sterling, Kan.

True enlisted in the Army on Nov. 19, 1942. He received his honorable discharge from active duty in February 1946, and was a member of the reserves from February 1946 until November 1950.

While in the service he attained the rank of Tech Sergeant; received the World War II Victory Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Ribbon.

He also held the office of Justice of the Peace in Weimar.

True was a salesman and Agrobusinessman. He had lived in Weimar since 1961, previously living in Chickasha, Okla. and Center.

He was affiliated with the local Lions Club, holding several positions, including president; a member of the American Legion Post No. 259; the International Order of Oddfellows (Washita Lodge No. 618) and Weimar UCC.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Wood; one brother, John True.

True is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy; one daughter, Marianne True Muehr and husband Dickie of Weimar; two sons, Dennis McMillan (Mack) and wife Jane of Birmingham, Mich., and John Robert (Bob) of Hilo, Hawaii; sister, Sue Mutz of Chickasha, Okla.

Grandchildren, Brent Muehr, Gina Muehr Lamme, Ryan True, Jason True.

Pallbearers were: grandson, Brent Muehr; grandson-in-law, Tommy Lamme; and members of the American Legion, Danial[sic] Ulbrich, Kenneth Hollas, Herbert Rerich and Bennie Kunz.

Honorary pallbearers were Richard Muehr, Bennie Kosler, Gilbert Stech and grandsons Ryan True, Jason True.

Truitt, William E.

Mr. Will Truitt Died Last Monday Evening
Was Found Stricken And Unconscious Late Friday Evening; Funeral Held Tuesday Afternoon.

Mr. Will Truitt, one of the well known citizens of this community, died at the Truitt home on State Street at six o’clock Monday evening after a brief illness. Mr. Truitt had been in the best of health up to the time of his sudden and fatal illness. At close to six o’clock he was found out in the barn at his place unconscious. He had gone to the lot to milk the cows, and had just begun milking the first cow when he was found unconscious. Everything that could be done, was done, but to no avail, his death resulting two days later after having been found in the unconscious condition. About three hours before he was stricken he was at the home of his brother, Mr. M. C. Truitt, and at that time seemed in the best of health and spirits. Mr. Truitt was sixty-two years of age. He was born in Maryland and moved to this county about two years after the close of the civil war, and has made his home here ever since. Mr. Truitt was a good man and enjoyed the respect and esteem of every one who knew him. He was a man of quiet and unassuming manner, attended strictly to his own affairs, but was always ready and willing to do a favor or lend a helping hand where assistance was needed. The Headlight, in common with the people of this community, deeply regrets the sad and sudden death of MR. Truitt, who has lived among us so long and who was so well and so favorably known to all our people, and extends its sincerest sympathy to the sorrowing relatives in their bereavement. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon with interment in the Masonic cemetery, Rev. H. B. Atkins of the Methodist church officiating. The deceased is survived by three brothers, J. E. and M. C. Truitt of this city, and George Truitt of Palacios, and two sisters, Mrs. D. P. Alley of this city and Mrs. G. C. Dukes of Girdletree, Maryland.

Mrs. Tubbs, former resident ofChesterville, died in the early hours of yesterday morningwhile visiting a daughter, Mrs. N. B. McFarland in Houston.She would have been 76 years if age nextWednesday.

While she had been in poor health forseveral years, she became ill only an hour or less beforeher death after having spent an unusually pleasant few dayswith various members of her large family.

She was born October 31, 1875, at Sealy,the daughter of Marion and Eliza Stanfield.'She was marriedto Thomas Berry Tubbs of Wallis at East Bernard October 9,1894. Their golden wedding celebration was a social event in1944. They lived in Chesterville from 1902 to 1944, whenthey moved to Houston.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs.Armit Thomas, Lissie; Mr. John Myers, Mrs. Charlie Lee, Mrs.N. B. McFarland and Mrs. Lee Brown, all of Houston; threesons, Alton W., Clinton and Raymond, Houston; 11grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; one half-sister,Mr. J. R. Denton and one half-brother, V. H. Horn, both ofChesterville.

A friend of the family said of Mrs.Tubbs, "She lived quietly and worked hard doing the thingsshe felt to be right. Perhaps no greater tribute can be paidany woman than that she looked well to the ways of her ownhousehold. She visited from time to time in the home of herdaughter, Mrs. Thomas, at Lissie and while weak instrength,took a keen interest in meeting old friends andattending church services there."

Mr. B. Tubbs’ little baby was taken suddenly ill Saturday afternoon about 5 o’clock and continued to grow worse. Mr. T. summoned Dr. Forrest from Eagle Lake who arrived about 9 p. m. but the little fellow was too low, the doctor could not do him any good, and at 10 o’clock he passed away into the hands of his maker. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, interment in the Chesterville cemetery. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of all who know them.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Untermeyer funeral home for Mrs. Mary Annie Tubbs, who died in the Seton Infirmary at Austin at 11:45 p.m. Sunday. She had been bedridden since suffering a stroke early in September.

Rev. Norman L. Roberts officiated and burial was in Odd Fellows Rest cemetery.

Mrs. Tubbs was born Mary Annie Miller in Columbus Oct. 18, 1864, a daughter of John and Jessie Cunningham Miller. Her father was the first mayor of Columbus. In the 1870's, when the yellow fever epidemic swept Columbus, Mrs. Tubbs was stricken with the fever as a small child. Her parents and, several other family members, died of the disease.

Her marriage to Theodore Tubbs was in 1882. Mr. Tubbs died in 1895 and was buried in the old City cemetery here. Later his remains were, moved to Odd Fellows Rest. Mrs. Tubbs was a resident of Glidden for more than 50 years.

She was a sister of Mrs. Kate Glithero who died here Aug. 4. A son, George Tubbs, died in Arizona in 1947.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. L. C. Roosevelt of San Antonio, ia son, Nelson C. Tubbs of Ennis, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Donald, Freelan and Thomas Glithero, Charles Lowrey, Frank L. Untermeyer and Allen Reyer.

Mr. T. E. Tubbs died at San Antonio Monday morning, where he had been for some time under medical treatment. Mr. Tubbs leaves a wife and three children, who have the sympathy of the community. The remains were interred in the Odd Fellows’ cemetery Tuesday evening, under the auspices of he order of Odd Fellows, of which the deceased was a member.

Mr. Tubbs was born on May 30, 1871, nearWallis, Texas, and was seventy-four years of age. He hadbeen in ill health for several months, suffering from hearttrouble. Much concern has been felt over his conditionduring the past few weeks.

He was married on October 9, 1894 to MissFannie Stanfield, they celebrating their golden weddinganniversary at their home in Chesterville in1944.

The family made their home in theChesterville area for forty-three years, moving to Houston ayear ago. Mr. Tubbs has many friends in this entire section,and was a popular and well-liked citizen of hiscommunity.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. FannieTubbs five daughters; Mrs. Rosa Lee Myers, Mrs. Linsie Lee,Mrs. Ruth McFarland, Mrs. Bessie Brown, all of Houston, Mrs.Emma Thomas of LIssie; three sons, Alton W., Clinton andRaymond Tubbs, all of Houston. A small son Leroy precededhim in death many years ago.

He had often visited in the home of thefamily of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Armit Thomas at Lissieand participated in activities in both the Chesterville andLissie communities.

Heartfelt sympathy is expressed to thefamily in their sorrow.

Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Ruff Tubbs, 64, were held Sunday, August 30, the Rev. C. L. Boone, Baptist pastor officiating. Mr. Tubbs died Saturday at his farm home.

He was born in March, 1878, in the vicinity of Schulenburg. He joined the Christian Church in early life.

Surviving are one brother, Jim Tubbs, and one sister, Mrs. Lily Hillis,. of Dallas.

Pallbrearers were Chester Walker, Wm. Michalke, Morris Ponder, Gabe Warren, Melvin Warren and Monroe Garrett.

Lester Tucker Buried Here After Military Services

Funeral services for Carl Lester Tucker wer[sic] held in Houston Monday, Rev. Gerald Marah officiating. Military graveside services were held at 2 p.m. at Odd Fellows Rest cemetery in Columbus.

Mr. Tucker, born 1894 in Myrtle, Miss, came to Columbus in 1914 and lived here about 20 years. In 1920 he married Miss Lilie Taylor of Weimar. She died in 1930 and 22 years later he married Mrs. Ann Carues of Jacksonville.

Resident of Houston 13 years, he was a member of Bethel Baptist church and was a veteran of World War I. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ann Tucker, Houston; daughters, Mr. F. E. Ham, Houston, Mrs. Marshall Sexton Jr., El Reno, Okla., and Mrs. W. C. Dickerson, Granger; one son, Melvin Tucker, Houston; step-daughters, Mrs. Orvie McCoy and Mrs. Jean Bundrick, Houston; sisters, Mrs. Clyde Hutchens, Houston, and Mrs. John Matthews, San Marcos, Calif., also several nieces and nephews and 21 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Glenn Arvile Hutchens, Harold Hutchens, David Ham, Albert McCoy, Bill Vest and Dan Vest. Honorary pallbearers were his grandsons.

Funeral Rites for Edward H. Tucker, 62, Held Saturday

Funeral services for Edward Houston Tucker were held at the Columbus Funeral Home Saturday at 3 p. m., with interment in Odd Fellows Rest, the Rev. J. K. Ridgway officiating.

Mr. Tucker died Tuesday of a heart attack at his home place northwest of Glidden. He was born on September 15, 1882. in Union county. Miss., a son of Newton and Jennie Major Tucker. The family moved in 1900 to Williamson county. Texas. On December 20, 1905, he was married in Jacksonville to Miss Clara Wheeler. They moved to Colorado County in 1913 and have occupied their present home since 1915. Mr. Tucker was engaged in farming but his favorite hobby was hunting, especially for deer. He was a member of the Baptist Church and had served on the Glidden school board for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Homer of Sacramento. Calif., Earl of Glidden and one daughter, Mrs. O. T. Breedlove of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Sylvia Breedlove. San Antonio; Marilyn, Robert Earl and Donald Tucker of Sacramento. Calif.; and Larry Tucker of Glidden. All children were present for the funeral.

Also attending the funeral were Mrs. Tucker's sisters, Mrs. Don Magee, Mrs. B. F. Ford and Mrs. O. A. Saxe, Beaumont: Mrs. T. J. Matthews, Glen Flora; her brother, Fred Wheeler, Beaumont: Mr. Tucker's sisters, Mrs. Clyde Hutchens. Houston; Mrs. Lena Bains, Fort Stockton; Miss Della Tucker, Austin, and two brothers. C. L. Tucker, Houston. and T. W, Tucker, Denver, Cob. A sister. Mrs. Rudell Matthews of Denver was unable to attend.

Ruth Peel Tucker

Ruth Peel Tucker was born in San Marcos in 1917, and lived mainly in Smithville, Texas. She passed away at the age of 86 in her home in Austin, Texas, November 8, 2004, with her family by her side. The daughter of Jefferson Coy Peel and Emma Peel, she was an industrious student and finished at the top of her high school class. She attended the University of Texas, where she met her husdand, Matthew Clarence Tucker. She learned to play Bridge while in her teens, and was an avid devotee of the game of Bridge, playing in clubs and informal gatherings of friends all her life. In Sept. 2004, Ruth hosted three childhood friends at her home in Austin to visit and play bridge. Ruth and her husband moved to Corpus Christi, where they became members of the First United Methodist Church and the Friendship Class, where she was pianist for many years. Ruth was an excellent gardener and cook, surrounding her family with color and heart-warming meals. In 2000, Ruth and Matthew moved to Austin to be closer to their children. In Autin[sic], Ruth became a member of the Berkeley United Methodist Church, and found happiness, inspiration and comfort there. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew C. Tucker; and brother, John Coy Peel. She is survived by her sister, Betty Smith and husband Charlie of Newark, Delaware; her sons, Fred P. Tucker, and Gary Owen Tucker of Austin; her daughter, Martha Boyd and husband Dave of Wimberley; her grandchildren, Kelly George, Courtney Tucker, Matt Tucker and wife Angie; and her great-grandchild, Cameron Gordon; her nieces, Cheryl Smith Pierce and Conner Peel; and nephews, John Peel and Andy Smith. A special thanks from the family goes out to Berkeley United Methodist Church, Hospice of Austin, Bebe Hernandez, Sue Stegall Huber, and especially Shirley Stegall Baugh, all of whom enabled the fulfillment of Mother’s wishes on this journey. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2004, at Berkeley United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Weimar Masonic [Odd Fellows] Cemetery in Weimar, Texas. She was born in Missouri Febuary[sic] 11, 1872. After the death of her mother she was reared by Mr. Chas. Brunson of this city, whose family gave her the benefit of an education and kindly esteem. She was a young lady of bright, vivacious mind and may[sic] graces. Her remains were committed to earth Monday afternoon at Odd Fellows’ Rest, Rev. H. C. Howard officiating.

Prisoner Is Found Dead At Columbus

C. A. Turner, 53, Eagle Lake farmer, was found dead in a cell at the Colorado County jail Monday by Deputy Sheriff A. A. Wheeler when he went to take the prisoners their breakfast. Inquest was conducted by Justice A. W. Hahn, who returned a verdict of suicide.

Turner had hanged himself with his own belt after writing a letter to a brother, R. J. Turner of Kenedy, requesting a “final favor”.

Turner was being held on a charge of rape., pending action of the grand jury. The wife and eight children are among survivors. [Interment in Garwood Cemetery]

Rock Island Rancher Dies LastFriday

E. K. Turner, retired ranchman of RockIsland, died on last Friday, November 28th at the age of 59years.

Funeral services were held at the FirstBaptist Church in El Campo and burial was in theMyrtleCemetery in Rock Island at 3:30o'clock on Sunday.

Mr. Turner came to Texas at a very earlyage and most of his life was spent in Wharton and Coloradocounties. He was prominent in farming and cattle raising onthe Turner Ranch located ten miles south of Rock Island.About two years ago he retired and since then he has madehis home in El Campo.

He is survived by his wife and daughter,Erlene of El Campo, two sons, Carroll of Kansas City andElmer Lee of San Antonio; three grandchildren; two brothersand other relatives.

A large number of friends from nearbytowns, including Houston, Columbus, Eagle Lake, El Campo andGarwood attended the funeral services.

Deepest sympathy is extended the Turnerfamily in their sadness.

WAGON WHEEL RUNS OVER BABY’S BODY AND CAUSES DEATH
Child Playing in Yard Where Father Was Hauling Trash

George AIlen Turner, 3 year and 6 months son of Jim Turner, died Tuesday morning from injuries which he received when a wagon, in which his father was hauling trash, ran across the middle of his body. The accident happened Monday afternoon and the child died a few hours later. The father is almost prostrated with grief.

Mr. Turner was loading trash in the yard and he had told his children to go into the house and had made them stop playing around the wagon fearing that some of them would be hurt. He had stopped his work and carried the little one into the house just before he started out with the load. Thinking the children were all out of danger he started the team and heard a scream. As soon as possible the wagon was stopped and when Mr. Turner got to where he could see the rear wheels he found one of them standing on the baby’s body.

A doctor was called but it soon became apparent that the little fellow’s injuries were fatal and he passed away before many hours were elapsed.

The little body was laid to rest in Odd Fellows’ Rest Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock, Rev. Theo R. Strong, pastor of the local Lutheran church, officiating. The pallbearers were Dick Carrington, Dennis Odom, Lee Hastedt and E. G. Miller.

To the grief stricken parents we extend our deepest sympathy.

The dead man was a brother of the late E.K. Turner, well-known in Rock Island.

At 2;55 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2002,God dispatched an angel from heaven to go to Rice MedicalCenter's Room 107 in Eagle Lake to release His servant LauraIrene Turner from bondage of her illness and set herfree.

Laura was born in Colorado County onSeptember 6, 1906 to James and Rosie Irene Amos, the firstof four children. She attended grade school in ColoradoCounty.

She met and fell in love with Neal Turnerand they were united in holy matrimony in 1925, remainingmarried for 54 years. To this union, 18 children wereborn.

Laura accepted Christ at an early age andwas baptized. She united with Rising Star Baptist Church andlater moved her membership to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church,where she remained an active, faithful and dedicated memberuntil the Lord called her home.

She served as a Sunday school teacher,k aDeaconess, President of the Mission for many years, and sheserved on the Mother Board, giving Godly advise to all shecame in contact with.

Laura's life was a life well lived. Sheexemplified the character of a true born=again Christian.She attended church regularly until her health failed. WhenLaura lost her sight, she continued to praise the Lord. Sheloved to go to church and was always praising the Lord inthe service.

Laura did not sit quietly, she leteveryone know that God ha]d been good to her. She servedas President of the Community Friday Night Prayer Band formany years. The Prayer Band met every Friday night androtated from house to house in the New Towncommunity.

She loved to read the word of God. Whenshe lost her sight, she still enjoyed the word of god beingread to her. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23; herfavorite song was " I shall Not Be Moved", and her favoritesaying was, "Lord don't leave me."

Laura kept a smile on her face.l Wheneveryou would visit her or just call and talk with her, shewould say, "Please pray for m." She was always saying,"Don't leave me Jesus", and "Lord heal me."

She was known for her pleasant smile andher good cooking. Laura made everyone welcome. When anyonecame to her house, they knew that they were welcome at hertable invited or uninvited. She loved cooking and eatinggood food.

Laura was a great soldier and a verystrong lady. She reared two grandchildren, Laura Gail Hornand Bobbie Joe Turner Jr., in addition to her 18 childrenand instilled the love of God in their hearts.

This was a life well lived, Laura was awoman that endured sound doctrine...she fought the goodfight, she kept the faith, and she finished the course. Nowshe is gone to live with the Lord eternally inglory.

She was preceded in death by her parents;her husband Neal Sr. on December 8, 1979; and sixchildren.

Last Rites For Miss Turner In El Campo Sat.   

     Another large gathering of classmates, relatives and friends assembled at the Wheeler Funeral Home in El Campo at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning, May 27th, to pay final respects to Miss Lauralea Turner.

     Roy Balkom, minister of the Church of Christ of El Campo and Dr. D. D. Tidwell of Waco, Texas, an uncle of Lauralea, officiated at the services.

     The choir of El Campo Church of Christ sang favorite hymns during the services.

     Miss Turner was placed to a final resting place in the Garden of Memories Cemetery near El Campo.  Serving as pallbearers were Truman Engstrom, Harry Priesmeyer, Coy Ramsey, Terry Lanier and Roger Stienke of Garwood and Ricky Kirk of Sheridan

     Lauralea was born April 27, 1954 the daughter of B. F. and Dorothy Draper Turner in El Campo, Texas.  She attended Garwood school and for the past two years was on outstanding member of the Rice High School Student Body.  She was salutatorian of the Class of 1972 and excelled in sports during her high school career, both in tennis and basketball.  She as a member of the church of Christ in El Campo.

     Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Turner of Garwood; one brother Randy, a student at the University of Texas; a maternal grandmother Mrs. Mabel Draper of Conroe and a number of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.

Turner Funeral

Linzie L. Turner of Eagle Lake, a half-brother of Mrs. Adolph Schultz of New Ulm, passed away last Monday night in a Houston hospital.

Funeral Services were held last Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mill-Bauer Funeral Home followed by interment in Lakeside Cemetery.

Mr. Turner had been associated for many years with the Texas Construction Materials Company, later the Lone Star Cement Co. plant in Eagle Lake. He retired from the company in 1964,

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. L. L. (Ruth) Turner of Eagle Lake; one daughter, Prim, of Tampa, Florida; three half-sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Fojtik of Columbus, Mrs. Lucille Bryant of Alta Loma, Texas and Mrs. Adolph Schultz of New Ulm; two half-brothers, Walter Richter of Weatherford and Ben Henicke of Beeville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Margaret Neal was born in Colorado County near Columbus November 26th, 1877, the daughter of William F. and Laura Ann Wright Neal, who was a descendant of Abram Alley, a member of Austin’s Colony. James E. Carlton and Dr. W. J. Wright are other prominent pioneer Texans who were her forebears. She attended Columbus schools and the Coronal Institute in San Marcos.

Her only child, Mary Davidson Wright died in 1926, leaving two children, Elizabeth Ann, an infant, and Mary Margaret, then six years old, whom Mrs. Turner reared in Columbus, where she moved form San Antonio in 1932. Her husband Robert H. Turner died a number of years ago. She was a member of the Baptist Church, Daughter of the American Revolution and of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. J. J. Everett of Alleyton, Mrs. Nina Neal Shannon of Houston, Mrs. L. D, Clements of Wharton and a brother, Gail Neal of Wharton.

Patricia “Patsy” Turner

Patricia "Patsy" Turner, age 59, of Garwood, passed away on December 5, from injuries from an auto accident near Marlin, Texas.

She was born on September 8, 1947 in East Bernard to Rudolph and Millie Maly Wasicek.

She was the owner of His and Hers Salon in Garwood as well as owner and operator of Garwood Sporting Clays with her husband Randy. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Patsy is survived by her husband, Randy Turner of Garwood; daughters, Danette Huvar of Garwood, Rachel Sunderman of Eagle Lake and Amanda Weishuhn of Fort Worth; sons, Dwayne Pagel of Garwood, Darrell Pagel of Eagle Lake and Jeremy Weishuhn of Dallas; sisters, Betty Hlavaty of Pearland, Dorothy Mader of Hillje and Shirley Fajkus of El Campo; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; previous husband, Frederick "Bobby" Weishuhn; and brother, Richard Wasicek.

Visitation was held Friday, December 8 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home and from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

A wake service was held at 7 p.m., Friday, December 8, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada.

Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Robert Guerra officiating. [Interment in Lehrer Memorial Cemetery]

Memorials in memory of Patsy Turner may be made to the Garwood Volunteer Fire Department or to the American Cancer Society.

Raymond Turner

Last rites for Raymond R. Turner, 52, of Columbus were held at Henneke Funeral Home Nov. 20, with The Rev. L. G. Wehman officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery.

Mr. Turner, a veteran of World War II, died In the Veterans Hospital In Houston Monday. He was born in Columbus Oct. 4, 1922, a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Turner. He was a carpenter by trade and a member of the Lutheran Church. He never married.

Survivor's include his parents of Columbus; 2 sisters, Mrs. Terry W Kotzebue of Columbus and Mrs. Donald Ready of Ponce, Puerto Rico; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers wore Daryl Ready, W. C. Templeton, Harry Divin, Jack Rau, Gilbert Girndt and Ed Machinsky.

Columbus, Texas, September 16,--A child of Mr. Turner of Glidden died of an affection with symptoms similar to diphtheria a few days ago and another child in the family is now suffering similarly. This second case is pronounced by Dr. Harrison, Jr., to be diphtheria. Anti-diphteritic serum is being employed and hopes are entertained for its recovery. The county judge has no authority to declare a quarantine until he can assemble the commissioners court and no legal steps have been taken in the matter. D. Harrison has suggested a voluntary quarantine by the members of the household and the citizens of Glidden which is being observed. [Place of interment unknown]

Hill of this place, announcing the death of Mr. Samuel Kent Tutwiler, which occurred on the 14th inst., at a mine near Prescott, Arizona. With deep regret we chronicle the above. “Sam,” was an old friend of ours, and although having met with many reverses in life’s stormy path, was as true as steel; and his many friends throughout this neighborhood will regret exceedingly to hear of his demise. Michael Todd Twitty, 21, of Columbus died Saturday, Oct. 14, 1995 as a result of injuries received in an auto accident.

Born June 9, 1974, he was the son of Willie and Barbara Twitty. He attended school in the Columbus Independent School District, graduating from Columbus High School in 1992 and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Columbus.

Funeral services were held Oct. 17 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. E. Ferguson officiating. Interment followed in Willing Workers Cemetery in Columbus. Arrangement were under the direction of Ben Davis Funeral Home in Columbus.

Serving as pallbearers were Cunningham Williams, Deshon Hargrove, Timothy Fitzgerald, Melvin Jones, Kenneth Evans, Grady Dillard and Julious Vickers. Honorary pallbearers were Lane Carter, Jimmy Carter, David W. Carter, Eckstine Carter, Fredrick Ashton, De’ Andra Carter, David George Carter, Percy D. Carter and Bryan Carter.

Mr. Twitty is survived by his mother of Columbus; fiancé LaSonya Johnson and son, Torre of Weimar; sister Cynthia Carter of Houston; grandparents L. J. and Florence Stewart and Perlie Mae Carter, all of Columbus, and Albert and Byrdena Twitty of Bryan; aunts Jo. Ann Johnson, Annie Carter, Cora Carter and Shanora Carter, all of Columbus, Almeda Twitty of Bryan and Ethel Twitty of Houston; uncles David G. Carter of La Grange, Eckstein Carter, David W. Carter, Lane Carter, Jimmy Carter and Rodney Carter of Columbus and Albert Twitty III of Bryan; and many other great uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services for Charles Tyler, formerly of Eagle Lake, were held Nov. 25 from the Cage-Mills Funeral Home in Corpus Christi.

Comtinued services were held at Mill-Bauer Funeral Home in Eagle Lake Nov. 26. The Rev. Bernie Helge officiated.  Interment was at Cheatham Cemetery.

Mr. Tyler passed away at Spohn Hopsital in Corpus Christi Nov. 22 after a lengthy illness.  He was 82 years of age.

He had resided in Corpus Christi the past four years, having moved there from Eagle Lake.  Prior to his retirement he was employed by Neches Butane Co. 

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Schellhase Tyler or Corpus Christi; one daughter Delores Perry of Navasota; three sons, Roy of Lake Jackson, Leslie of Ganado and Calvin Patrick Jr. of Corpus Christi; three sisters, Ora Eastland of Altair, Dorothy Walker of Rosenberg and Ruby Wills of Vidor; six brothers, Marvin of Altair, Roby and Walter or Alvin, William of LaMarque, Victor of Stafford and Clifton of New York City; 20 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Clifton Louis Tyler, age 73 of Woodside, New York, were held January 10 at Dulany Funeral Home. Burial was at the Cheetham Cemetery in Sheridan.

Mr. Tyler was born on April I, 1911 near Altair to Mr. Louis Tyler and Mrs. Addle Flippen Tyler. He was a former resident of Houston and had been in New York for the past 45 years. Mr. Tyler had from[sic] the Macy's Department Store in New York after 32 years of services.

He was a Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sisters, Mrs. Ora Eastland of Altair, Mrs. Dorothy Walker of Rosenberg and Mrs. Ruby Henry of Vidor; brothers, Groby Tyler and Walter Tyler both of Alvin, Willie Tyler of LaMarque, Victor Tyler of Richmond and Marvin Tyler of Nada; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held yesterday,March 7, at Mill Funeral Home for Mrs. Louis Tyler, 69, whohas been a resident of Colorado County for fifty-sevenyears.

Mrs. Tyler was born in Stephenville,Texas, the daughter of Jane and Jackson Flippen. When shewas twelve years of age, she moved with her family toAltair, Colorado County, where she spent the remainder ofher life. She was married to Louis Tyler November 6,1896.

Rev. Joe Anderson conducted the funeralservice at which the Lissie choir sang, and burial was inthe Sheridan[Cheetham]Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons of Mrs. Tyler:Gene Paschall, Lester Paschall, Gene Selph, Melvin Selph,Roy Tyler, Vernon Tyler, Donald Pryor and KennethPryor.

Last Rites Held For Louis Tyler,85, Columbus Native

Altair -- Last rites for Louis Tyler, 85, a resident of Altair since 1924, were held last Saturday at the Mill-Bauer Funeral home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Joe Townsend, Baptist pastor, officiating.

Mr. Tyler, who had been in bad healthseveral years, died in Laughlin hospital at Eagle Lake lastThursday.

He was born at Columbus, Jan. 10, 872 andwas married in November, 1895 to Miss Addie Flippen atNada.

Mr. Tyler spent his early life inSheridan and worked 43 years for the old SAAP and SPrailroads retiring in 1938.

Mr. and Mrs. Tyler were the parents of 16children, 13 of whom survive. Mrs. Tyler died several yearsago.

Surviving children are Charlie Tyler ofPt. Neches, Mrs. W. W. Pryor of Baytown, Mrs. C. W. Eastlandof Altair, Mrs. M. E. Selph of Eagle Lake, Homer Tyler ofHouston, Clifton Tyler of New York City, Groby Tyler ofManvel, Bob Tyler of Victoria, Mrs. H. S. Willis of Houston,Mrs. W. R. Marvin Tyler, 83, of Garwood, passed away Aug. 20 at Rice Medical Center in Eagle Lake.

He was born in Sheridan, May 21, 1921 to Louis and Addie (Flippen) Tyler and married Gladys Girndt, Oct. 7, 1979. He was the former owner of Marvin's Restaurant and Blue Goose Hunting Club in Altair as well as a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Nada, Nada Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 108 of Eagle Lake, Elks Lodge of El Campo, Houston Livestock Show and a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charlie, Homer, Clifton, Bob, Victor and Walter Tyler as well as an unnamed infant brother; and sisters, Alma Selph, Myrtle Pryor, Ora Eastland, Lilie Tyler and Bessie Tyler.

He is survived by his wife; daughter Maureen Lasiker of Victoria; son and daughter-in-law, Clifton and Ida Tyler of Columbus; step-sons, David Schuirring and wife Betty of Garwood, and Stephen Stuirring and wife Terry of Austin; sisters, Dorothy Walker of Rosenberg and Ruby Henry of Vidor; brother, Groby Tyler of Alvin; sisters-in-law, Lucille Tyler of LaMarque and Evelyn Tyler of Alvin; grandchildren, Marvin Craig Tyler and wife Valerie of Austin, Victoria Tyler of Columbus, Patrick McQue of Victoria, Phyllis Lyn McQue Arabi of Victoria, Stacy, Cindy and Gregory Schuirring of Austin and Chriss Schuirring of Eagle Lake; and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Aug. 23 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Nada with Father Joe Koebel, Father Joe Vrana, Most Rev. Charles V. Grahmann and Most Rev. John Yanta officiating. Inter-ment followed in the parish cemetery in Nada.

Pallbearers were Major Renge, John Naiser, Dennis Sbrusch, Terry Karstedt, Lowell Raun, Jerome Waligura, Delmar Krenek and Rudy Polach.

Honorary pallbearers were past and present goose hunting guides that worked for him.

Funeral services for Phyllis Rompf Tyler, age 62, were held January 4 at Henneke Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Huth officiating. Burial was at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus.

Phyllis was born February 28, 1922 in Houston to Lorena Duprec Rompf and Jack Rompf. She lived in the Bernardo area for 10 years. Phyllis worked for the U.S. Postal Department. She was the postmaster of Altair.

Survivors include daughter, Maureen Lasikar of Victoria; one son, Clifton Tyler of Columbus; three brothers, Barclay Rompf of Houston, John Rompf and Ralph Rompf both of Fredricksburg; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Jim Wiese, Louis Schorlemmer, Mike Mangum, Bill Blair, Jimmy Adkins and Mike Cheatham.

Victor Lester Tyler, age 65, of Stafford passed away Dec. 4 at the Ft. Bend Hospital in Stafford following a sudden illness.

He was born in Cheetham to Louis Tyler and Addie Flippen Tyler on March 8,1923. He had been a resident of the Stafford area for the past 24 years and had worked as a welder for the Metal Arts Corp. of Houston until his health failed.

He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Mr. Tyler was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clifton Louis Tyler, Homer Tyler and Charlie Tyler, sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Pryour and Mrs. Alma Self.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruby Holster Tyler of Stafford; daughters, Sandra, Parrish of Deer Park and Debbie Hansen of Pasadena; sons, Victor Tyler, Jr. and Larry Wayne Kinney of Waco; sisters. Ora Eastland, Altair, Dorothy Walker, Rosenberg. Ruby Henry, Vidor; brothers. Walter Tyler and Groby Tyler both of Alvin, Willie Tyler of LaMarque and Marvin Tyler of Nada; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.-

Tymel

Ed Tymel, 75, of Columbus, passed away June 16 in Columbus.

He was born July 7, 1930 in Hillje to William and Albina Shimek Tymel. He married Shirley Kimble on March 22, 1962.

He was retired from the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dane Edward Tymel; two sisters; one brother; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Cheryl Edwards and husband, Dan, of Lansdowne, Va. and Deanna Dezarn and husband, Chris, of Bastrop; sisters, Henrietta Priete, of El Campo, Leona Bachus and husband, L.A. of Chico, Calif., Angeline DeSanto, of Philadelphia, Penn. and Ann Hallinger and husband, Frank, of El Campo; and four grandchildren, Kelly Danica, Jeffrey Brendan, Mary Elizabeth and Dane Aaron.

Tyrone

Patricia Ann (Pat) Tyrone, 42, of Columbus, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995 at Columbus Community Hospital.

Born March 8, 1953, she was the daughter of Raymond and Katherine Berry. She grew up in San Antonio and attended school there. Ms. Tyrone served in the U.S. Air Force for four years prior to working as a switchboard operator for Baptist Memorial Hospital System. On Dec. 12, 1987, she married Rolland Vann Tyrone and moved to Columbus two years later.

Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Booker Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ in Columbus with Rev. Carl Evans officiating. Interment followed in Gay Hills Cemetery in Columbus. Services were under the direction of Ben Davis Funeral Home, Columbus.

Serving as pallbearers were Mrs. Tyrone’s friends and family members. Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Berry, Patrick Berry, Joseph Green and Leroy Glover.

Mrs. Berry[sic] is survived by her husband of San Antonio; her father,of Oakland, Calif.; son, Patrick D. Jones of San Antonio; daughter, Marnina Berry of California; three sisters, Peggy Berry of New Braunfels, Norie Tylerson and Tandolyn Berry, both of San Antonio, cousin Lucille Green; special friend Leroy Glover of Columbus; and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister, Mamina Berry.
